epitome of classic

Name what model you feel defines Rolex.
Not necessarily the watch you like the most.
Not necessarily the older models
or newest for that matter,
Not necessarily one you own...
but the watch that epitomizes the concept of the classic Rolex as you perceive it.

Reflective pics of your choice encouraged.

Datejust.

By far the biggest seller, and visually a clear descendent of models going back to the bubblebacks.

If you want pics, Google it. ;-)

I say the Sub. I could be wrong here, but I think it is the most iconic and recognizable Rolex. Just MHO

Great question!
I guess for me Rolex has always ment "tool watch". A simple, rugged piece of equiment that one could put on and not worry about. In that vein I feel Rolex has made some great pieces. The 1675 is a watch that I've always loved, but if I had to pick THE Rolex that epitomizes the concept of the classic tool watch I'd have to go with the 5513. Simple, strong and purpose built.

Two come to mind.
The Sub and the Gold Datejust.

For me it is also the DJ, in TT. It is the most seen and maybe most copied watch ever.

Good question, Mrdi (what's your real name, BTW...this Mrdi is like neither here nor there!! ...and how the hell do you pronounce it anyway? )

I've said it a million times....even when I didn't own it....has to be the 16610 Sub-date...instant recognition, most replicated, screams R-O-L-E-X in capital letters and is definitely the ULTIMATE Rolex out there.

A close second would be the TT DJ....also easily recognisable and also most replicated in the world!!

When I think of Rolex I think of 'bubbleback'. It may not be as imitated as the Sub or DateJust, but this is what comes to mind when I think of the brand.

Well it has to be the Bubblebacks, Precision, or DD, followed closely by the Sub.

It ain't mine, unfortunately! Yes, it is beautiful....my dad has a steel version and although I don't normally like gold I wouldn't say no to the watch in the photo! :)

Ditto. I think this is what I thought of before I knew much about Rolex - very common model (more so than the sub IMO).

The ubiquitous DJ. It's everywhere, the most copied and easily attainable.

It's not just your opinion, Al. When you go into a Rolex store, they usually have a full case of steel mens Datejusts, a full case of TT mens Datejusts, a full case of womens steel Datejusts, a full case of womens TT Datejusts, and a case with one of each "sport" model. Rolex makes and sells many, many times more Datejusts than Subs each year.

While I agree with others that the Sub is a Rolex icon, it puzzles me how so many people on various watch forums get the idea that the Sub is Rolex's biggest seller. They don't seem to realize that most Datejust buyers have no interest in the details of watches, or talking about watches. They're just buying "a Rolex". It would be like the members of a Corvette forum thinking that the Corvette is the most popular Chevrolet model. ;-)

Note: Above comment not intended to reflect on this thread, which is about "epitome of classic" Rolex -- not "most popular" Rolex. I just brought this up becuase of the way Al worded his comment.

I'm with the TT DJ group. To me that is that classic Rolex and epitomizes the brand. To my mind, no other legitimate watch maker has anything that resembles the DJ. Many others have similar designs to the Sub Date (just as Rolex used design elements from earlier watches in coming up with the Sub).

For me it has to be the original Prince series, closely followed by the Sub and then the TT DJ.

Much as I love the Sub's design, I'd have to say that the quintessential Rolex is the DateJust. Nothing says Rolex more clearly than that cyclops and fluted bezel.
