Explorer II (216570) Can crystal be changed to non-cyclops?

I love the 42mm Explorer II but I really don't like the cyclops date crystal. Is there a non-cyclops crystal from a different Rolex that can be installed by a service center?

curious...why don't you like the cyclops lens? it's traditional & standard on most contemporary Rolexes with calendars.

A few members here have done it. Hopefully they chime in. Apparently they are applied with glue and like silverbullet said, heat or some well aimed pressure can remove it.

Please chime in with more details. The main thing holding me back from becoming a 216570 owner is the cyclops!

Bump for more info.

Since we know the crystal can be removed I guess the question should be - Is there another genuine Rolex non-cyclops crystal that will fit the 216570 and who could I turn to for the swap?

I looked into it when I was concidering the exp 2, I contacted a few Jewlers and they said they would do it. There r some diy videos on YouTube but I'd let a jewler do it. I'm with you though I'm not a fan of the cyclops and I have seen pics of it removed and it looks awesome! I have a sd and I love having the date but the clean look of not having a cyclops. Good luck and if you do it post some pics.

If I'm not mistaken the 42mm expy has AR coating under the cyclops, which will remain after cyclops is gone.

Here's a video with some great shots of the Exp II without the cyclops. Looks very nice!

Originally, I thought the Exp II was the one I wanted when i started looking for my first Rolex. After trying it on I found the cyclops not to my liking at all.

Yep!

OP, I hope someone can answer your question for you regarding a crystal sans cyclops. I think you'd really like it.

Well the first challenge is this: Name a 42mm Rolex that doesn't have a cyclops...

What? No names? Right...

Cleave away...

If the AR is on the outer side of the sapphire can also be removed with a cape cod

Can anyone confirm or deny? Have a cyclops-shape patch without the AR coating would look terrible and I don't want to find out the hard ($$$) way!

On my 40mm explorer 2 i once swung my arm near the corner of a brick column and nicked the cyclops ever so slightly.

It's plastic so it's soft and easy to scratch.

I had it replaced. A few weeks later when getting dressed for work it just fell off.

I took it back to my watch guy and he repaired it - but then i noticed the mag was off.

I had read at the time there was a mag issue with some of the BLNR's. It didn't really bother me that much and then one day i had posted a beautiful picture on instagram and someone came out of the woodwork to challenge the authentication - pointing the mag. Needless to say I had it fixed and the mag is what it's supposed to be.

No AR on this model that I noticed.

My personally? I prefer the cyclops.

Aside from the potential AR coating issue, the problem with not having a cyclops is that the date wheel is inset too far, since it was designed with the cyclops in mind, so it throws the proportions off (even on the SD4K.) The original Sea Dweller had a smaller dial, which brought the date wheel closer to the chapter ring, making the dial more balanced looking.

So, outside of the pre-ceramic Sea Dweller, I'd either go cyclops or no date at all when choosing a Rolex.

Yes they can be removed but trouble now most have the AR coating under the crystal position where the cyclops is glued on.

Wouldn't advise it since it will lose of its value
