Do you take off your Rolex at airport security?

Regardless whether I'm at a major airport or not, I feel very uncomfortable leaving my prized Rollie in the tray. Despite the fact that I try not to lose sight of it, I feel that one day some master of sleight of hand will poach it. Security areas are quite busy, and things like that happen fast before yuu know it. I tend to refuse to take it off most times, despite having to go through a pat-down or metal detector search. I've also tried "hiding" it in jacket pockets or a backpack, but I seem to be more nervous as I can't see it myself. Am I paranoid a bit too much? I know there are much more expensive time pieces out there, but earned mine with honest hard work and would not like to lose it a stupid way. What are your thoughts or stories?

I put mine in my carry on luggage well before entering the security area so no thieves see me doing so, then put it on once through...however just get it insured then there will be no worries

Yes, you are being to paranoid. I have yet been asked to remove my watch in any airport security process.

There are some here that will tell you they have been asked to remove their watch. In that case if you are concerned pick up an Oakley vault or a case budi watch case. You can safely put your watch in this and place it in your carry on.

Personally, I feel like the safest place for my watch is my wrist

When I flew earlier this week I noticed people in front of me were taking their watches off. I never do, but I had never flown from this airport before. I asked the TSA agent if we had to take our watches off. His response was priceless. He said "Giiiiirl, you don't EVER take that beautiful watch off. If I had that watch I would sleep with it on and give it a goodnight kiss."

I always have my watch travel case/pouch with me just in case I need to shove it in my carry-on.

^This. In my 15+ business flights so far this year, I've never had to take my watch off. Then again, they were all within the CONUS and not international. I'm sure protocols are different on other countries.

I've had TSA wand my watch a few times, but not remove it. I have been asked to put in the tray at the Amstredam airport. I wasn't worried about it being stolen there as I would be in the Atlanta airport.

Aren't you guys being a little supersticious? I just put my watch on something soft in the regular plastic tray. Only moment I lose it out of sight is a split second in the x-ray. What could possibly happen. I trust my own observation a bit more than my fellow humans though ☺️ I dont feel any discomfort

And how does that work out for you? You just say "no" and try to walk past the security guy? I would have thought that if I did that I'd get the rubber glove treatment.

I travel a lot. I used to take mine off but have since stopped thanks to this forum. Have yet to be stopped or asked.

My father-in-law left his watch in the bowl one time and then got on a plane and left the country for a week. He called when he got back and they had his watch waiting for him. I thought for sure it was gone.

I stopped taking off my watch at the AP the first time I flew with my Submariner. I usually wear it on a Nato strap so I attributed that to why the metal detector didn't go off but I also have worn it on the steel bracelet.

I even had a TSA agent at my local airport that I fly out of all the time say "Wow, brave. Going through with the watch AND the belt on" and just laughed and waved me through.

So with my rolexes as well as with my AP's - I tell that they 'will' get magnetized if they go through the machine and that if they want, they can swab it with that cloth.

For the few times that I've been asked to remove it, never had an issue.

Never had an issue.

If I remember, I take mine off and put in my carry-on. Sometimes I forget I'm wearing it and just walk through. But then I'm TSA-PRE and hardly ever have to even take my belt off. Never have to take my shoes off.

I keep my watch on, your "Rollie", whatever that is should be just fine.

I wear it every time and have never been stopped. However, this is domestic only. I have heard it's a bigger issue when you fly international.

My watches never come off when I fly commercial. Between Global Entry and TSA-Pre, I rarely get questioned about anything.

I have no problem putting my SD4k in my shoe with my money at all. However I don't do that with any Genta designed watch bezel so to speak, so those stay packed till I arrive.

"What could possibly happen. "

In Atlanta, documented, you get shunted aside to be wanded while a TSA person makes off with your iPad. The owner is yelling that his iPad is being stolen. The thief disappears. The iPad is gone for good. It was an iPad that was stolen. How much more desirable would be a Rolex?
