I know your ceramic AP case broke one time but I highly doubt it will break going for a swim unless you are doing olympic backflips off a diving board or white water rafting.
I say skip the daytona and make the AP your "Beater".

Agreed, funny I'm looking for a sports beater and the AP ceramic is in my top choice to swim and wrestle with my kids!

I firmly believe that every collection needs a Ceramic rolex, the ease of use, the quick and reasonable service times makes it a great watch to wear when you may not be able to 100% ensure the watch will be safe and scratch free.

As for the collection - Cant really comment till I know what the incoming will be

Well you know 5 on 6, AP, 5712, 5711, 5167R and Daytona C, I would have been happy with these, but I since I could add one very special one, a unique piece, the kind of watch you want to leave to your son when you die, and which will be the pinnacle of your collection when you live, you'll know soon enough my choice, as it is in the drawing boards it is already great, am expecting a shock, in a good way, when I see it finished

Spending £8-12K (minus any VAT refund) for a beach/sea/holiday watch seems a bit daft.
Personally, I'd throw a few grand at a Chopard LUC Sport or Pro One, and if it looks a bit sorry for itself after a few years, so what.
A Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine is another option for under £4K.

I agree you need a "beater" but is a Ceramic Daytona the best for this over something like a Sub?? Then again a Daytona is cheap amongst those mentioned in your collection! :)

With such a classy collection I would have thought Aquanaut might be your equivalent of a posh "beater" with the composite strap?

PS - Will be interesting to see after time if your feel necessary for both 5712 and 5711 in a collection of 5 watches.

Im starting to look at my first Patek, the thought of my Sub, Daytona and a 5711 (or 5712) with a Aquanaut is starting to appeal to me for a 4 watch collection.

Well I need a watch I can wear without fear of damaging it and in a way I have become very snobbish as that I need to really like a lot a watch to wear it, even for the beach and holidays, and it's 8800 GHB I am paying exactly

I fear if I buy something I like not very much I won't wear it, while I'm sure I'll wear a Daytona on vacation in Asia for the beach and pool and other activities.

Would make a cool 4 watches. Well my Aquanaut is the 5167R, in rose gold, so a little expensive for the job of beater, whichever kind.

Can't stand a sub on the wrist more than 40 minutes...

About the 5711/12 my Favorite is the 12 but love the other as well, and having both means that the 5712 slot will be decided with the 5711, so less wear on the 12, also in some cases I like a clean blue dial with date in a window, we will see what happens, but they are my 2 favorite SS watches

Excited to see the Aquanaut make it's way into your rotation in a few weeks--September??? (let's work on those incoming shots--RG will look great in the sun).

Well I take rather crappy pics of my watches, I make awesome photos of people and monuments or animals, but somehow of watches really not, but just for you I took these 4, just now, in the Justin Bieber multi watch style love the guy who could like him apart 14 year old girls...

Anyways so many guys post and have posted such awesome pics of these 2 watches that compared to my crappy ones I am a little ashamed, so usually I post incoming, and very rarely after that..

So crappy pic warning for those faint of heart.

Yeah I'm excited to get some RG soon, have been wanting a RG on rubber for quite a while

Funny how the 5712 doesn't look so small compared to the AP...
To be honest only these 2 make an awesome duo IMO, but I wanted a 5-6 piece collection, once I have them I don't think I will want to add any, these will basically be my favorite watches at a comfortable price zone for me, ok the last one is outside of my comfort zone on that matter, costs more than all the others combined, but really wanted one and could get one, until June I am looking at pics of it everyday, well the one that looks the closest to what it will be like...

Ha - thats the first thing I noticed!

Looking at it now, if that was my collection the AP would end up being the beater rather then the Daytona

LOL, thanks Paul

You know that I took them at 5:30 in the morning in my bathroom right? With my IPhone So the light, quality and toes in the pic are all natural and normal

I just took others, still not very good compared with many other members' pics of these two pieces, Benlee made the best of the AP IMO, his pics were amazing, but will still be better than last night's pics

Again I love the AP, it was supposed in a way to be my "soft beater" meaning for light sports and swimming, but like my ceramic case broke without the watch ever getting a hit, AP says it was because of a shock, but replaced it free of charge and didn't even argue, I would imagine it had a defect as honestly there was never a real shock, only very very small minor ones which, IMHO, could not have cracked the ceramic case, but the whole thing made me a little paranoid over using my AP except in a rotation as a daily with the other PP's I have and am getting.

Anyways most members say you need a Rolex as beater, my days of surfing and windsurfing are way gone, so at 45 I'm more into softer sports, and a Daytona should handle that without any problem...

In any case the white dial Daytona does look great and I think it is very cool to have one in the collection and be able to use it mainly when I go on vacation, if it get scratched, damaged or in worse case stolen, I won't be happy at all, but won't particularly loose a lot of sleep over it, while I clearly would for the AP and my PP's

I think the ceramic Daytona would be a nice addition; actually a very nice "beater". Looking forward to seeing your big independent incoming.

BTW, are you adding a SS 5711? Do you think it will be redundant with your 5712?

SS, and no they are my 2 favorite S watches, they will be rotated and even though I have a preference for the 5712, I will be very happy to wear it I think, I tried diversity and understood better get what I like the most

As a fellow 5712 enthusiast, I can't see the point of getting the 5711, but everyone's different (actually I have three steel subs - 16610, 1680 and 5513 - so I'm not one to talk!).

You have a nice collection. My "beater/holiday" go-anywhere watch is the 16610, FWIW.

Well so many Rolex lovers get different subs, some which have minimal differences between them, which are much smaller than differences between the 5711/5712, I love wearing a Nautilus, but really love the 5712, so I figure if the Nautilus wrist time is divided in 2 having both, my beloved 5712 will look better for many more years than if it was the only Naut, plus when I see pics of the 5711, it is awesome to have the whole dial blue and just the date window and central seconds hand, again I prefer the 12, but both are amazing and different enough, and feel very blessed that I will have 4 dailies, AP, 5711/12 and 5167R of that level of watches I really love, but the positive result of posting a lot these past few month about different watches is that I have really thought hard about which pieces I really want, would love to be in Davos today and to have my 5167R, but hey in 3-4 weeks is not awful, can't complain...

I would scrap the Daytona and I am getting one in the next few months but with the PCLs I personally don't see it as a beater or beach watch. The sand alone will scratch the heck out of the center links. The Diver case cracking was just a fluke thing and AP did right by You as they should. Enjoy that beauty and beat the crap out of it. I wouldn't waste $12,400 on a Daytona that will take a back seat to many of your pieces. Just my 2¢

I get what you are saying Mike, but don't really care if the center links get scratched, the problem is when I go on vacation I like to have a watch, if ever my AP or another got stolen I would really go crazy, if it's the Daytona I really won't be happy about it but taking a 10K loss won't be too horrible for me, and also I am getting it for 11065$, because getting it in Switzerland, not 12400$

The 39mm explorer 1 at 39mm you mean? It's nice but to be honest I think I would prefer adding the extra cash and getting a Daytona, I mean the new daytona with white dial is a stunner, if I would not be totally in awe over AP and PP and didn't have such incomings, as well as a cool duo, it is the kind of piece which could hold the central place in a good Rolex collection, the Explorer is nice but IMO nothing special, it won't give me any special pleasure to wear it, while I will clearly have pleasure wearing the Daytona on vacation, it's for me the good balance between a watch I won't baby and that will still bring me joy

As a new owner of a new 5712 (again), I have to say that it is not redundant with my 5711r.

After owning many PP, and specifically the 5980 in rose twice, I prefer the thinner profile of the 5712 and 5711.

Congrats way in advance on the independent. I'm with some of the others here - I'd use the AP for beach, vacations. But hey if you want the chrono for that good price, go for it and congrats again.

I think all the PP and AP sports model watches are suitable for beach vacations. But it really depends on how you feel about scratches.

I think a Daytona C would be a nice addition if you think you will wear it. Otherwise it will just be another watch in the collection. If you are on the wait list at the AD, you don't have to decide on the watch until you get the call. Even if you decide to pass on the watch, the AD will have no problem selling it to someone else. So I would enjoy your current watches and see how you feel about the Daytona when it becomes available.

I have decided to pass, and to use my AP for vacation and beach, the main reason for this is I have set myself 2 rules, not more than 5-6 watches maximum in my collection, and more importantly, no more than 2 per year, this quota is already reached for this year and the next, I forgot that if I got it that would make 3 in 2017

Yes I think you need to put yourself limits, when I will have 5 which is next June as I have 3 incomings until then, and I want a watch I will need to decide which watch has to go, if I love them too much to let them go, then there will be no incoming, I had 10 watches at one point and only wore 3, ok they weren't as cool as the ones I have and will have, mostly Pams and Rolex plus a few others, they were never worn and in the bank, I think with the watches I will have; AP CE diver, PP 5712, PP 5711, PP 5167R and one from a very small independent, a rotation is possible, all are watches I really love and thought about for a long time before buying, and I think 2 per year is reasonable

The 5712 is super nice! Sometimes I am tempted to sell what I have, get one of those and call it a day.

To your question, a Daytona would fit in well. I prefer black though.
