I'm a proud owner of a DSSD (black face). It was a reward to myself for climbing a number of mountains (literally). For a while I've been thinking about complementing this watch with a GMT two tone. I love the look and style. It would take me a full year to afford it by which time I would have climbed the highest peak in every European country. It would be an apt reward.
Howver I'm attracted by the Explorer 1.
Although not a beater it would be a more suitable watch than my DSSD for climbing, and it's affordable enough to consider taking it with me to Russia next year to climb Mount Elbrus. But by doing this it would put off my GMT purchase for a couple of years. On top of this I already have a beater watch for mountaineering, an Alpina 4.
I know, a first world conundrum of the first degree, but I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this.
Should I save straight for the two tone GMT as a focal point for my adventures next year, keeping my Alpina as my mountaineering watch or upgrade the mountain watch to the Explorer?
Any thoughts would be received with gratitude.

I wear an Explorer II for my hiking and outdoor adventures and have for years.

But, I do put on a TT GMT or a TT Sub-D (or a gold Omega or Date-Day Tudor) from time-to-time when I go someplace that is a bit more upscale.

Choose the one you will get the most out of in the short-term while you save up for the other..

My guess is that you will end up with both. Whichever one you buy, you will be thinking about the one you didn't buy. The pressure will be unbearable. You will give up and end the agony by buying the other watch.

Owned two Exp 1. Gorgeous toolwatch on pictures, not so fun on the wrist. I vote GMT. You can always get the Exp1 later.

Sounds like your lifestyle/pursuits makes the Explorer the obvious choice. HINT: how do you decide which mountain to climb, when and why? So picking a watch should be easy, right?

Flip the DS for the new EXP for now and use the EXP to meet your goal and get the GMT.

Exp I 39mm between the two you mentioned, no doubt.

While I love the look and shine of the TT GMT's and Subs, when I buy one, it won't be the watch I wear during outdoor activities like you participate in. But....I am a bit OCD when it comes to putting a watch with polished center links in situations where is highly likely to get scratched/scuffed. I'd be far less concerned with the brushed SS band on the Exp.

Explorer seems more your style being you are a mountain climber but I think you want the tt gmt more so I would just save for the gmt tt.settling is never good as you will still yearn for the gmt.Not that the explore is settling as its a great watch but I think it's settling for you as you really want gmt.just my opinion which is pretty useless hahahaha

I feel the explorer watch type fits your lifestyle (exploring) better. However the gmt function would be very useful on your travels. The explorer 2 (16570 or 216570) seem like the perfect watch for you. Have you considered these?

Out of the two you recommend I would pick the explorer 1 over the two tone gmt because I dislike two tone and even more so when traveling (risk of being stolen as it is more bling). Yet another reason to consider the understated low polish explorer models. A SS gmt black or blnr are also great options.

Thanks for your replies everyone. It's great to hear the thoughts of other watch enthusiasts. The 'journey' towards owning a Rolex is an enjoyable one to be on. Akin to planning an expedition.
Where am I in my decision making? Well, having spent a two day trip back from the Pyrenees, having climbed Pico de Aneto with my two young children, contemplating watches and culminating in my message yesterday morning I'm leaning towards the Explorer first with the GMT remaining a long term goal. Once I've shuffled off this mortal coil there would be something physical left behind to remind my offspring of the mountain experiences we shared.
