What's wrong with the hands on this 1680

Can anyone explain what's going on here?

It was either partially re-lumed or it has moisture damage. Moisture vapor tends to condense at the center of the case causing damage at the base of the hands first. It's hard to tell from the pic but it looks like the minute hand has a bit of a gradiation from dark at the center to lighter toward the end.

Not sure why someone would partially relume the proximal first 1/10th of the minute hand and not the rest...

Unless someone else chimes in I think moisture could make sense,

But somehow I feel the metal/gold alloy around the canon pin could have something to do with very subtle magnetic fields generated near the radioactive decay of the tritium.

anyone else?

It's probably excess oil that has migrated up from the movement and stained the lume at the base of the hands. It's not an uncommon problem.

That's patina creeping in on the hands, and as stated above could be the result of humidity/moisture from through the years, maybe oil, or could just be aging tritium. I think bad cases end up as corrosion on the metal of the hands. Either way, quite common. Same thing has happened on a couple of my old Subs, including this 1680 I used to own.

Either oil or moisture wicking into the hands as said above... I have the same thing in a few of my vintage tritium watches.

This watch (http://www.hqmilton.com/watches/1985...3-spider-dial2) has a similar issue but the color is different; more brown than green. For the watch linked above, it is attributed to oil staining.

I'm going to side with the oil migration theory and add that the handset may have been replaced wherein the over-lubricating event occurred. Alas, just a guess.
