Earlier today I was helping my in-laws load their Christmas tree into the back of my truck when my watch snagged on something. I've been wearing the watch for a while on a cheap and flimsy Maratac strap which broke at the clasp.

My stomach dropped when my Daytona hit the curb and then landed in a puddle of standing water left over from a recent rain. The crystal was shattered and while I snatched it up off the street pretty quickly I'm sure water got inside the case.

I immediately hacked the movement and took the watch to my local AD. It's on the way to the RSC in Dallas and the sales lady at the AD (a family friend) is going to call me as soon as she gets the estimate from RSC. She said it was going to be around $400. The one good thing is that it looked to me like the watch hit on the crystal and the bezel/case wasn't scratched or dinged any more than it already was.

Lessons learned: if you're going to break you Rolex, do it right!

It's not going to be $400...

You're looking at a full service and new crystal at the least.

Why would you put a $7,000.00 Daytona head on anything less than an original factory bracelet? How much did that makeshift band cost? 5 bucks?

Ouch! Yes, closer to 1K. Unless they waive the service. I hate to admit but stuff is right, time to rethink the strap strategy....

Is it safe to take your Daytona off the bracelet...? Sorry to hear bout it OP, I'm sure RSC will return it as good as new.

oh that hurts !! I feel your pain, well atleast the case didnt get scratched or dinged ,but if the water got inside , i doubt it'll be $400 , keep us posted.

I gotta admit that is tough to look at.Another reason I believe watches should stay on the band.

A lot of people put their watches on straps, mainly because of the look. I've been wearing mine on a strap because it helps the watch fly under the radar, as I wear it everywhere including to work in an environment not suited to Rolexes.

Also, don't think that because you have your watch on the original OEM strap it can't be ripped off your wrist then as well. I lost a Luminox watch that way, and if I remember correctly I read a post from Padi where he lost a watch was well. Much less likely, but not full-proof.

I'll post an update when I get estimate, but I was planning on sending it in for a full service within the next year or so anyway. Whatever needs to be done, as long as it comes back fixed and running like before!

I just put my 116520 on an Everest, seemp very solid, hope nothing happens... OEM bracelets should be safer, at least you have the safety clasp, wonder how often you should change the spring bars?

Probably run a risk no matter what.....

I'm really sorry for what happened to your Daytona. As mentioned above, the price is going to be much more of 400. I think that is the price of a regular service without any replacement

Very true!!!

One drunk night I slapped my buddy on his back side so hard my Omega popped off the band. It happens for sure. OEM band and spring bar couldn't handle the pressure.

The irony here is that most people use natos as the most secure strap for diving etc to prevent spring bar failure. Seems like the weakest link came from a less obvious spot

Sorry to hear, and I hope you get out of it for less than $1500... service cost on the chronos are more than just a 3 hander.

Did you put it back on the bracelet before sending it in for service? Or head only?
