Vintage bubbleback crown question
I recently inherited my father's 1953 oyster perpetual bubbleback 6084/875***). The crown is the type that does not screw in - it just pulls out. Also, the crown is marked Rolex Super Oyster with a Swiss cross between the words Super and Oyster.
How common is this pull-out type crown? Is the Swiss cross unusual or rare? Thanks for your help! |

Pictures speak a thousand words!!!
You'll get a much better response if you can actually show the piece you are talking about...

The Super Oyster crowns were only used for a year or two, 1951-53 or so, and a lot of them ended up being converted back to the screw down type at the first service, since they were not nearly as reliably water resistant as the latter. It is nice to have one kept as original, however I wouldn't wear the watch in the pool!
Here is my 6094 (1952):

Great looking watch!
Thank you for the info. That is exactly like the crown on my watch. RM |

A Super Oyster Question
I have a similar watch, Oyster Perpetual Bubbleback, ref 6084, serial #70x,xxx which I'm told and I've researched to be a '50-'51 vintage in ss, dome bezel, no date but with super oyster crown as pictured here. Hands and dial are original but crystal is a service replacement. Crown was kept as a non-waterproof to retain originality by the watchmaker who recently serviced and cleaned it up. I love this watch as it's so subtle, light weight on the wrist and keeps perfect time. The dial is egg-shell with triangle markers, no numbers and the coronet is in relief and set below the 12-0'clock triangle. Sweep blue steel second hand extends all the way to the 1/5 second marks, lume is long ago depleted but still evident on hour triangles and hour and minute hands. Sorry, I don't yet have a way to photo it. But here's my question: Does having the super oyster stem affect the value? Plus or minus?
Thanks Steve |

Probably not significantly.

My wife has a 6084 14k with waffle dial. All original dial, hands and crown restored by Bob Ridley this year. Crown says Super Oyster Super with no X. Pull out as well.
Lovely watch indeed. |

I have 2 Rolex 6085 and one (year 1951) has the original Super Oyster crown with + between Super and Oyster.
The other has a more recent screw down crown, i like more the original Super Oyster crown it make those watches more unique and rare.

@shat
Regarding your question, "Does having the super oyster stem affect the value? Plus or minus?" Interest in bubblebacks has dramatically slowed (obviously that's not true of Rolex sports watches). Even so, the more original the watch, the more collectible it is. Having the original Super Oyster winding crown is definitely a plus. _____________ Instagram: @onthedial |
