None of the wind/solar/hydro plants are the be all and end all solutions. If you encounter a bad weather pattern than they are stuffed (even hydro plants, what happens if you get a drought (like Australia has now) and your hydro plant dries up???)
We built a lot of secondary "emergency" plants using gas technologies. They can be switched on with 15-30 minutes notice to pump electricity to the grid when the spot supply price is high.

BTW, people are starting to build wind farms out at sea. Let's see whether these experiments work or not.

I can't say too much ....... Because I'm unqualified to do so, but a good friend of mine is working on a project co-funded by an 'Electronics Giant' and Oxford University, to simplify a Plating/coating process that will enable the future production of solar panels in the 'Pence' each.

As my business is LED Lighting - I'm keen to see these 'Greener' forms of energy harness become more affordable.

Although I'm not sure if your comment is about braking wind or using wind, I applaud your contribution to this thread about, ehh, mmm, throw a dog a bone, what was the subject?

NZ medals to energy, this Forum is great!
Burning fossil fuels is ruining the Planet. Not only that, for the forseeable future the current Russian regime, Chavez loonies and feudal Middle Eastern sheiks have us by the gullies [testicles] while at the same time bankrupting our economies. We don't need to send our young people to fight to protect oil supplies. Keep the money at home and become self sustaining not just through alternative energy sources but also with energy conservation.
Nuclear power passes the buck to our grand kids.

very good points and i agree with all that you say BUT- the other options are not , and have been proven to be, sustainable or financially beneficial to anyone. Hopefully one day this will not be the case and we will not need to rely on these despots

You may be right but we do not consider all the 'costs' with the carbon fuels ie., environmental pollution, climate change [ the conservative insurance industry recognizes this is a growing problem,] health issues related to pollution, the cost of sustaining a military presence in the Middle East.
Economies of scale will bring down the costs of renewable energy. Don't forget that what ever we ultimately spend on renwables will stay in our economies and not be spent on ridiculous places like Dubai [sorry folks], Russian military body building or for crap players like Andrez Shevchenko....

By the way researched the NZ medal events:

Ovine Insemination [Chased sheep 100 meters]
Ovine Insemination [200 meters]
Ovine Insemination Relay [4 guys one sheep]
Ovine Insemination Triathlon [1 guy 3 sheep]
Ovine Insemination Pentathlon [1 guy 5 sheep]
Ovine Insemination-- Gymnastics Parallel Bars
Ovine Insemination-- Long Jump
Ovine Insemination-- Aquatics in the sheep dip

one thing we will have to disagree on is Global warming. i believe as do many scientists that people play a minor if any role in it. there has been ice ages and melts every few million years since the beginning of earth. we are in the middle of a receding ice age at the moment ( an ice age lasts 20,000 years)

I'm annoyed for even joining this hijack but while we do need to cut emissions in the USA, China is putting a coal-fired power plant online every week, and methane is far more potent a "greenhouse" gas; as such, we should move away from methane-producing crops like rice. Try telling half the world that they need to use wheat as a grain instead of rice. This whole green thing will never work on a worldwide scale. I do my part my no longer buying from China whenever possible, which is very difficult when purchasing consumer goods in the USA. Last year I couldn't even find a DVD player NOT made in PRC.

When it's all over, we should do a medal per capita count. This way we will know which country is really the best. Count based on Gold medals only. What says you?

As things stand today, there's no chance for any other country to even dream of catching up with China!!

Just chipping in, supposedly (I read it in an article) if the entire Arctic ice cap melted, parts of the world would only lose about 10m of coast due to teh sea level rising. Reason being that the Artic ice is floating...think about your ice cubes in a glass of water.
If the Ice in the Antarctic melts...we're buggered.

Old Hollywood is right about the methane...A doc on Ch4 in UK stated that the methane produced by cattle is worse than all of the jet and motorcar fuel used in the entire world.

France gets 80% of its power from nuclear, and I don't see any environmental problems cropping up there. This whole global warming swindle is based on a bunch of communists enriching themselves and insecure micro managers finding what little power they can in life by telling people what light bulbs to use.
No worries. In a couple years, I will be off to St. Kitts. ;)
Congrats to NZ on their medals.

Oh...I thought you were referring to what the US won in one day...

Gotta love the sportsmanship of the Olympics even though there are athletes who make more in a year than I will make in a lifetime.
