Not to hijack the thread from the OP, Donna in Texas. First, decide what you want and budget you're working with, then just search the FS section for "trusted" sellers.

Holy Cow! Well done. It's a truly incredible watch that wears even better than it looks in pictures, and it is extremely photogenic. Enjoy that beauty!

Thanks again, all. Now that it's a week (and a day!) old, I must say that I like wearing it virtually all the time. I wore my trusty DJ yesterday when I was working out (sorry, but I always wear a watch and no one at the gym has ever seemed to notice or be put out), and it was pretty much the first time I had worn it in a week. It felt so light when I picked it up, I thought it was a toy watch!

I may have to look into a winder. Not sure I want to set the DJ every time I wear it, but being 31 years old, it only stays wound for maybe a day without being worn.

Anyway, I appreciate all the nice comments. Not a single person has noticed it, and no one except my wife and one local watch aficionado friend even knows I own it!

Was there some sort of reasoning for getting this watch or did you just go by looks?

Uh, I feel like there was some reasoning... ...although (going out on a limb here), I think looks enters into the purchase/don't purchase decision for a few folks here.

I started a couple of threads:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=505142

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=505902

which, although my topic was sometimes misinterpreted, gave me a lot of insight.

I decided that I really loved the blue dial, and thought the density and heft of platinum was pretty cool, and that I tend to not settle when I buy myself the very occasional splurge. I've been wearing the same Rolex since 1985, so am not currently a serial flipper. Although I still believe the white dial SS Daytona would have thrilled me, I was disillusioned with the wait, and not interested in paying $3,000-$4,000 over list to get one now. The idea of buying the "ultimate" Daytona was appealing, although it is hard to "justify" on a superior looks or superior movement basis, with the metal of the watch looking only slightly different, and the movement being identical. Sure, I got carried away. But I am absolutely thrilled with the new watch and expect to have it for a long, long time. If that is the case, then the extra dough upfront will not be that important.

That was my reasoning.

Without question, an up front outstanding person to deal with. I've ordered several Rolex watches from him and his service is excellent as are the watches he sells. At least now I know where the Daytona went. I'm very happy to know it is a forum member that bought it. Wear it in good health.

Thanks again. I guess the title of this didn't exactly scream, "I got my ultimate watch and am so excited!!!!!"

Anyone who knows me, knows that isn't the way I operate!

Actually, for me, to read that NYT article on the SS Daytona, head into the local Rolex dealer the next day, and come back two days later with a deposit check when they had a white one to see, was pretty fast! And then to go from a SS waitlist in August to a platinum purchase in December, was also surprising for me. Even more surprising would have been for me to plunk down the price the local AD wanted for a new one ($69,000 including some special limited edition travel case).
