My Babe

I took this picture tonight. It captures the best part about owning a cockatoo. This is my Babe.

I have a friend who's dad has a parrot rescue as well in AZ. I've visited the place, those birds are so cool!!! It's a huge responsibility that most people don't realize when they first get one unfortunately!

My best friend from collge and later roomate nursed birds back to health, we had African Greys, Blue and Gold Macaws, and cockatoos. It is amazing what a personality and how smart they are! They attach to you just like a puppy.

Very nice. My brother has had a Yellow Naped Amazon named Cappy for over 30 years. The bird has outlived many of my brothers dogs. Cappy has quite the vocabulary and loves a good slice of pizza.

When I was a kid (early teens), my sister's boyfriend had a few large birds. They never warmed up to me, and would just hiss when I got close, even if he was holding them and keeping them calm.

What is the life expectancy of a bird like this. My in laws had an African Gray that they bought as a hatchling. Had to put in the will. When my father in law got sick my MIL found someone that took the bird from them.

That bird was mean. Would bite everyone but her. Including my FIL who fed it with a syringe for a long time.

Babe is 15 or 16. I have two African Greys that are 24 and a 4 year old Eclectus. Life expectancy can be 80 or 90 years. Babe has a lot of medical problems and life was very bad before she came to me, so we don't think she will live to be that old. The Greys too weren't cared for. The Eclectus is younger and in better shape but his diet wasn't correct either. So it's a crap shoot. Every time Babe is put under anesthesia for her medical problems we take a risk of loosing her. Hopefully we are pasthe worst of her problems.

The sad thing about only taking rescue birds is that they come sick or damaged both physically and mentally and they are at least as smart as a toddler. So the psychological issues are sometimes tough to overcome. I would love to have room to rescue more because I have two macaws and a cockatoo that

Strange that no "dog lovers" has stepped in complaining about wild birds in captivity?
