My GMT

got this pic from the shop that is servicing it... a first for me, and hope I'm delighted with the outcome...

I made a purchase of a nice watch at this man's store in Long Island. He told me his service department is good and I enjoyed working with him and went for service- the first time I've indulged in a full service. The watch seemed to have a weaker than expected power reserve, a somewhat tricky working crown, and what seemed to me a somewhat inferior polish job. He assured me it will be looking great and working great. The price- I am not exactly sure yet! Here is the before picture and the current status of it in parts...

The service should be free!! Provides him with an opportunity to rectify all the faults there are in the watch he is trying to sell you!! If you have not already made some kind of financial commitment then I would be looking for another example.....there are plenty of GMTs out there that have no issues. Hope it works out well for you.

Woody- I am sorry, I don't think I was clear... I did not buy the GMT from him. I bought another watch from him, and while doing so, he spoke of his service department, and as I mentioned, I enjoyed meeting and working with him, got a good feeling about him and his store and services, so went for service on this GMT, which I purchased on eBay. BTW, I feel I am into the watch for a good enough price to factor in a service.... thanks Woody!

Does he have a Rolex parts account? Be sure he's not servicing your watch with aftermarket parts? Is he trained in Rolex finishes and finishing techniques?

My apologies, I misunderstood your original post. If you have a good feeling about him and his business then I am sure he will do a great job

There are plenty of good watchmakers in the world.

Let us know when you get it back.

Indeed Larry! I can liken it bringing your car to the dealer. One thing I am more familiar with is guitars. I have a great tech who is now a great friend, and he doesn't have a store, it's all word of mouth and his work is the best! But I also see this as a personal feeling and choice one makes, whatever one is comfortable with. Followup is on the way, thanks!

I bought a Grand Seiko at this man's shop, David Desso in Long Island. When I called I immediately got a great feeling about him. He was friendly and took his time with me on the phone telling me what models he had and discussing the pricing. I really didn't feel any pressure. So I eventually got to see him.

The store is beautiful. His sons work there too and were involved with me. Treated me like a king! I bought a Grand Seiko. He gave me a good deal. And he told me his service department is tops and that he can service my watches for me. David has an extensive background in this business having spent years with jewelry design and watches in Manhattan.

I was wearing my newly acquired- through eBay- GMT and he took a look at it. I was concerned at that point about a somewhat inferior polish that had been done. David said his guy could clean it up. Also, the power reserve seemed weak and the crown didn't operate smoothly, it was tricky to get it in place. The watch was in working condition though and losing maybe 7 sec/day. I am a little picky, I think many would not have any complaints about the watch. $5500, I feel a good price, all links too.

I must add... I no longer drive, have some physical problems and it turns out that David lives in my neighborhood. They drove me home with the new Seiko! It was a gas! We were talking watches all the way! When I got home, I handed off an old DJ I have and he replaced the crystal for me. And I handed off the GMT when I got back the DJ with the new crystal, a great price and it really brought the watch to life.

Last night he dropped off the GMT. It is a “P” serial, from 2000 and it has been worn, but it is vastly improved in appearance. The crown is operating smooth and easy. It’s gained about 3 seconds and it’s almost 24 hours. And of course, just one day. From my experience it takes a little while for a watch to settle in with some run time.

I feel funny mentioning the price here in public because to me it was a super bargain. I am also now somewhat of a customer and feel I was given a special price. But David is easy to find online should you need his services or a great deal on a Grand Seiko.

Mike, don't mean to ignore you, but that's not of much concern to me. If it was, I'd have asked or gone to Rolex. Bottom line is, I am happy with the experience.

Most likely you will just be in need of a cleaning and re-lube. Pretty young watch to need parts.

Hope there aren't any(many)spare parts after he puts it back together!

Kidding! Got mine back after service a few months ago and she is perfect!

there wasn't any mention of replacing any parts. I must say too that it seems to be staying accurate, not gaining or losing a second so far since about 12 hours ago, this morning. So it's looking alot nicer and operating well... I am pleased!

Not sure if it's visible in the pictures, but the bracelet looks pretty nice, alot better.
