Rolex 1680 red MK2 dial defect?

Hello,

I'm seriously thinking about "investing" in a red Submariner. Either for myself or later to trade/sell it (maybe)

I found one from 1973. It looks nicely aged and has awesome patina on the lumes and dial. But (there's always a but, right?) Someone for some reason "touched up" rather say screwed up the dial. ☹️

Based on the attached photos, what is your expert opinion whether it's a no-no or go?

I'm also wondering how's such paint job affects the value of this otherwise nice Submariner?

I appreciate all advice, opinion.

Thanks a bunch!

That's way too large of a defect in my opinion and I would simply carry on looking at other watches. Red 1680s quite often have some chipping at the dial edge, but this one was either particularly bad or they've touched up way more than required and done a terrible job also.

If you're buying with a view to potentially sell on, this is the worst type of watch to buy. The potential customer base will be vastly reduced as so many people will be put off by the dial damage.

Forget this one, the value is in the dial.

It's a mess. Too much to mention, really.
Run.

If the price is low enough to factor in getting a replacement original dial then
go for it - otherwise... walk away

Yea was thinking about that, let's say the price is about 60% of the same without defect.

But still replacement dial, replacement hands... I don't know it might doesn't worth the hassle.

Id say its not worth the hassle. You're going to spend at least a few grand on the right dial and who knows how long that will take. There's plenty of nice, unadulterated ones out there worth looking for.

You will not find a mint red sub dial lose. If you do it will most likely cost you basically the price of a mint red sub watch. No reason anyone would sell one much cheaper than that.

Looking at the case etc I think the dial matches nicely. I would not spend more money on this watch so either buy it for what it is (very, very cheap) or save up more money for a much minter example.

Hands on this one is fake? Insert is a service insert. Case is very polished and quite bad and the dial has a massive chip. Price need to reflect all this. By a lot.

Yes, I saw that - fake hands. (rounded, smooth edges and fake lume/patina)

This watch is a bit of a train wreck and that case does't warrent a decent dial..
