Explorer ii or Submariner

Hi everyone,

Apologies if this kind of post has been on here before but I'm new and need some help.

I currently have an Explorer 2 (black dial) since 2013 and can't keep thinking whether I bought the wrong Rolex. The explorer 2 doesn't seem to be very popular.

I am now in a position to be able to sell and buy a submariner date if I want to. Do you think I should? Or should I wait until basleworld later on this month to see what is released before buying the sub?

Thanks

You buy and wear what you like! There's no wrong Rolex, just a matter of preferences.

What would make buy something other than a Sub? Any ideas?

I did look at a GMT BLNR but decided against it. My dream would be a ceramic Daytona but the waiting time would be too long. If they released a GMT coke this year in steel I might have a think

Not my place to judge but I assume you originally purchased your Explorer 2 at the time because you liked it?

Has that changed?

Have you fallen out of love with it?

If you have then fair enough, but don't get rid of it just because you assume other people don't like it or it doesn't get the same amount of forum time as some of the other SS sports models.

What does it matter what other people think?

If you like it that's all that matters - Its your Rolex, you enjoy it!

If its a financial decision to sell the one to help purchase the other then fair enough, but in your heart of hearts do you really want to get rid of the Exp 2?

Tough decision I know, but could you keep the Exp 2 and get the Sub?

Unfortunately only you can answer that question, but it doesn't matter what other people think or should I say what you assume other people think.

Actually I think you will find it is the opposite and there is a lot of love on this forum for your watch.

I have seen many posts in the short time I've been here singing its praises and indeed stating how its under rated and what a great watch it is.

No mistake if you bought what you liked..... Everyone had different tastes but I would think the gmt complication on your Explorer is more useful day to day than the sub bezel/high water resistance.

Nothing wrong with the Explorer II and you picked it for a reason. Everyone loves a Sub though. Since Baselworld is so close, why not wait and see what happens. Always wear what you like, everyone else can buy their own watch. Cheers!

I wouldn't. And I disagree with the premise of your post. The Exp IIs are quite popular here. Are they Sub popular? No. But the watch definitely holds it own. And, it's not the same Rolex that every other 25-year-old stock trader on The Street wears because they just want to sport a rolex. You bought it for a reason. Own that reason. Some times the grass is just greener on a ceramic bezel.

The EXP2 is a great watch. If you want a sub, just add it to the EXP2...they make a fantastic pair.

Please don't make a flip based on what you think is popular.

The exp II is certainly a nice piece (my preference is for the white dial, as is the preference of many). I think most importantly given how close it is to Basel, it would be a shame to buy something now only to find that they release something you want more...also gives you more time to think about this.

I think upgrading from a black dial exp II to a sub date is definitely worth it though. You may call my opinion biased because the sub date is my favourite watch. In any case I think it is better value for the money and slightly more versatile...and has a more timeless and iconic design. Go to your local AD and try one on and take some time to think about it. Good luck in your decision making.

I actually just tried on both Explorer 2 40mm and a Sub 40mm. I actually preferred the Explorer 2 because it's thinner so more wearable for me. Also, since I have a family member on the other side of globe, GMT hand is a lot more useful to me than waterproof.

If it doesn't sing to you then get rid of it.

First, it doesn't matter what we think. It matters what you think. Second, how can we have an opinion about what you should do, if you don't tell us your reasons for having a change of heart? All you've told us is that the Exp. II doesn't seem very popular, which, IMO, is a lousy criterion to use when deciding which watch to buy (or trade, or sell). I would assume you have better reasons than that. If so, why don't you tell us what they are, so we can better know how to advise you?

Friend,
Keep the Explorer 2.

Buy yourself the LV submariner for your birthday/xmas/anniversary.

Not LN sub. LV.

EXPLORER 2 is the best bang for your buck ss tool watch.

Because it's less popular, it's nicer in my opinion.

*I own 42mm polar, LVC, LNC so I need my opinion on what's in the safe

Have you tried the Sub on and checked it out in the mirror to make sure you love it? If you're not careful, you may fall into the common and expensive routine of buy, love, get bored, sell for a loss, repeat.

The SubC is a great all around watch, but it doesn't sing enough to be a great life-long keeper, IMO. Look around the forums and you will see a lot of people who started their watch obsessions with the SubC and eventually flipped it.

How many watches do you want in your collection?

Trust your instincts. You bought the wrong watch. Get the sub.

if your intention was to purchase the watch that the most random members of the public prefer then yes the explorer was the wrong choice

I think it's a great watch. I'm planning on getting a polar one soon, I'm just waiting to see if there is a ceramic version released at Basel.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the advice and what nice people we have here!

I think I am going to keep it and think about next purchase. I didn't buy a sub at the time as I thought there were too many people who own one and wanted something different, so I should stick to that reason. Thanks all.

I was in the same situation. Eventually, the watch is on your wrist. Don't get what people like, instead get what you like! I got my SubC because I had a good impression when I first saw it. If you still like the Explorer, keep it.

If you decide for a Sub I suggest you try on the 114060 Submariner. I did and preferred it over the Sub Date.
