I would say AP has more brand awareness in the US than hublot largely because they have been all over Hollywood and on the wrists of athletes and musicians alike. Hublot certainly competes with AP for this market with marketing dollars but AP is more prevalent on tv and in movies

I personally like a little brand awareness sometimes. Life's to short to always be on the low

No, the comments were implying that AP were a mainstream recent trend, and not one starting from the 70s as a sports watch, and the Royalty citings were to show they are not just known by the hip hop crowd.

Speaking of Hublot, there is a song out now where the rapper smugly condescends the line - It's a Hublow not a Hublott, not realising it's actually pronounced ooblow. Sums it all up really.

Pateks aren't worn by celebrities? Maybe not Ukrainian soap stars, but damn man, Charlie Sheen was in the news last year when a hooker stole his 5131. Maybe not the guy you'd most want associated with your brand but him to John Mayer to Future. There are a ton.

In Beyonce - Upgrade You, she says, Let me up grade you Audemars Pijay you. While it's pronounced Audemars Pigaay.

Audemars Piguet, which has announced its association with the legendary Bolshoi theatre, also proudly introduces the latest star to grace its select constellation of brand ambassadresses: Svetlana Zakharova, principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet and Opera.

Svetlana was born in the Ukrainian city of Lutsk, into the family of a member of the armed forces.

And Patek is becoming popular with rappers as well...nothing wrong with that:

She, like Kim Kardashian doesn't know jack about the AP she is wearing, she should be wearing Hublot and would be if they were priced higher.

She actually says Pikay, which I have heard American jewellers say before so maybe it's also a slight cultural thing, but she pronounces Hermes correctly so you can see what she cares about.

If your definition of mainstream includes royalty, then I wish I was swimming in your stream. I'm talking man on the street, music and movies.

The thing is this: pretty much every well-known Rolex became well-known because of movies/celebrities/both (James Bond/Sub, Paul Newman/Daytona, Presidents/President), ditto the Tag Heuer Monaco/Steve McQueen, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms/Jacques Cousteau, Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso became famous because of its association with athletes (polo players, skiers, and race car drivers), Omega Speedmaster due to Moon shots, etc.

The APs are no different, including the original Royal Oaks and the ROOs. So I don't really see how or why this should reflect any differently on them than on any of the other aforementioned models/brands, which have stood the test of time and been popular for decades. Do you?

You are mixing up apples and oranges, I was talking of royalty and rappers as being let's say famous persons of (dubious) interest. The mainstream was referring to timing, ie ROs were known from the 70s and not just a recent trend as was earlier claimed. I also don't think APs are mainstream, I don't even think Rolexes are, just its brand name, I am only really referring to mainstream as amongst WIS and WIS aspirers.

I agree. We've said the same thing 5 times. Let's drop it. Rolex people know. Audemars some people know from the last five years because of movies and rap songs. Otherwise, we're talking about 1% of 1%. Regardless, they're a great watch and I've always had at least one in my collection.

Yeah, I've just been having some fun on the AP forum today, we're all cool here.
