Sub Question of History

I was discussing an acquaintance's Rolex Sub and my GMT2 while waiting in Starbucks today. Just a casual conversation between a couple of new owners of our dream watches, a little mutual admiration, etc. Ya know - the usual stuff folks discuss in the queue in coffee shops.

He said that the U.S. Navy used to give newly-minted submarine commanders a shiny new Rolex Submariners with their promotions. Anybody know if this is true?
