Shopping Dilemma

This past weekend the wife and I were in D.C. and as we were staying at the Dupont Circle, not more than a couple of blocks from a nice little AD I decided to do some shopping, you know, just in case they had a BLNR there. To show the wife, get her approval.

They were about to have a 40% sale on Breitling, and I was tempted, but I don't need the bling. BTDT.

So, anyway, no BLNR. But they did have the rhodium dial Yachmaster. I wanted one of these last year, but when I finally saw one in person, I was underwhelmed. It's one of those that looks better in pictures, perhaps. But this time, I was more impressed with it. I'm not sure why, but I like the understated colors and the light pop of the blue hand and lettering. It's a very elegant watch. I like the sub for traveling, with the brushed finish it's a bit more understated, but I can't get the YM out of my head.

I am not impressed by the pricing though. It seems like a heck of a premium for a bit of platinum. If I remember my retail numbers correctly, it's $2500 more than the Batman. Even used on TRF we're still talking about at least $1200 more for the YM.

But I'm also not 100% set on the BLNR. I'm keeping my sub, and do I need two watches with a black face?

Ah.... decisions, decisions.

FWIW, the AD was "The Tiny Jewel Box" on Connecticut. Very nice folks there.

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Between my subs and YM, I found I didn't wear my YM often so off it went. I'd stick with the BLNR or maybe get a LVc.

I owned a TT Yachtmaster for years with a white dial. Though I loved the watch for a good many years, I eventually found the bezel a little busy and wasn't crazy about the scratches. I think this would also be true of the RD Yachtmaster (black Ceramic bezel on this watch in S/S would be a big improvement in my opinion).

Currently I own both the 114060 and BLNR, and wondered the same as you "do I really need to Black dial watches?" I thought for sure the 114060 wouldn't get as much wear. Completely opposite wear both of them regularly and enjoy them both very much. Really completely different and nice have the PCL's as well as the sub bracelet as options, I wouldn't part with either. Side bar, the GMT function is really handy for me as I do travel so that is also a part of it.

I got all heated with the rhodium/blue/grey combo twice from pictures... The OP and the YM ..... Underwhelmed both times after trying in person... So I know it's not for me. But I still think the blnr is the best looking steel 6 digit Rolex... The complication is much more useful too for most people.

I'm not a lot of help. The only YM that gets my motor running is the 116655...and like Mike, I doubt if the rhodium would get a lot of wrist time for me.

I think I would stick to my guns on the BLNR. The pop of blue on the bezel and 24 hr hand should give you a nice change up from the sub. If you find it doesn't, then you can always flip it for something else down the road.

Alternatively, if you do think the two are too similar, how about a Sky-Dweller? You get the GMT function with a totally different look, IMO.

Thanks guys! I've BTDT with the LV, it was great for a year and I tired of it.

I think I will pass on the YM and focus on the BLNR. There is soooo much positive on that watch, and I've seen very few negative comments on this forum.

Lots of SD recommendations. It's a bit too big for me. :(

Personally, between those two choices, I'd go BLNR. But you would do well to do business with TJB! Great people.

Shopping Dilemma

Some watches look small in person vs. in pictures online. It can be quite a shock seeing them in person after admiring them from afar for so long. But the real test is wearing the watch.

I coveted the GMT2 Pepsi for decades but always managed to talk myself out of it because seeing the 40mm Rolexes in person made them look small compared to my 42mm Omega Seamaster. However, after FINALLY getting my Dream Pepsi GMT2 and wearing it I have found it's not too small. In fact it's perfect! Ya gotta wear one around the store for a bit, walk around and check the time. That's the real test. Some watches wear bigger than their actual dimensions. Others wear small.

Given your collection I'd go for the YM, and in the UK the Rhodium is selling for retail still so any discount is a great thing you have.

Good call. The YM is a silly watch imo...and too much like your Sub.

Re: The BLNR. It's the same Watch as the GMTIIC which has been around nearly a decade. Just a different color insert, 24 hour hand and font color. It's not like a car where you have major changes in body style / design and engine specs.

If you like the color, get it...but very similar to your Sub.

Why not a chrono or a non-Rolex?

If going YM, I'd go trusted seller route since they don't typically hold value like a BLNR or Sub would, so more discount to be had.

The BLNR is very cool, world's first bi-color ceramic bezel etc., so I think you can make a case to own it with a Sub.

If you are set on the AD route and a YM, I'd actually save up a bit more and get the RG YM on the Oysterflex with the price of the Rolesor YMs being where they are.

If anyone wants a YM, I definitely think the original Platinum dial is the best choice. A trusted seller here is the best value - I also think the 16622 prices are about same as a Sub of comparable age/condition.

The BLNR and Sub are WAY too similar for me to own both at the same time!

All my watches have a black dial. Thats my preference. I thought about adding a white dial and probably will for my next watch, but the three in rotatiom are black. The white will add variety, but will be wearing my black ones mostly

Having more than one black dial gives me variety in the type of black dial i want to wear

I like the BLNR and am always tempted by it, but every time I've see it in person (about 5 times) I'm just a little underwhelmed and like the online pictures of it more than real life.

On the YM (I have the blue dial) I personally think it looks better in person than the pictures online. I had mine for going on 4 years now and love it.

With that said, based on your post, I would go with the BLNR, it's what you really want.

I purchased from The Tiny Jewel Box and had a great experience. Ask for Steve! He gave me a pretty good price on a DJII.
