This is pretty much what I did. In addition to generally preferring SS, I factored in that it's easy to go from the 5711 to the DD. Still in honeymoon phase, but I expect the 5711 should be around for the long haul. And if not, it's an easy flip and then I'm probably talking to my AD about the olive green dial WG DD.

Had many Pateks over the years.... Would choose (and have) the DD40 due to high reliability, usability, and overall cost of ownership. Add in the Rolex ~10 year between service and fast / reasonable service turnaround times and the Rolex is the go-to. Pateks are nice, yet not really something i'd wear due to overall fragility and ease of scratching the bezel. Polishing a Patek may be a bit of a problem from threads i've seen online.

My choice may also be due to having an relatively active lifestyle versus a sedentary existence. If you're the later, maybe the Patek could work for you?

Here's an idea, perhaps flip the Patek (leave it sealed) for profit to buy the DD40? Am sure you smartly got a ~15% discount on the Patek from a willing dealer because you have to wait for the timepiece. Perhaps due to Patek demand, you can pre-arrange to flip it to 'trusted seller' here for a DD at normal discount.

I would compare the 5712 more against the DD40. I would take a 12 over a 40 but not the 11. Found it underwhelming on me personally.

However if my name came up for the 11 I would take it and pass it on to a friend.

Those who knows fine things, the 5711 is an impressive acknowledgment, a class act.
Wish I have your problem, with an easy answer. A Patek Philippe 5711.

Patek because Haute Horlogerie.

The more I think about it, the better it would be to own them both. The Rolex being round and yellow gold, the Patek squared and not yellow gold, yes beautiful duo!

DD for me. If it was a different model Patek it might be different but between a 5711? I'd take the DD anyday

Exactly the choice I'm trying to make at the moment!

I think the YG DD40 is my preference, but I'm thinking of wearing the 5711 for a few months then changing to the Rolex. Probably the best compromise, because at least I'll get to try the 5711 and know whether it works for me.

Good luck to the OP in choosing!

Add one vote for the PP. Both gorgeous watches however, can't really go wrong.

I put the two together and got the 5711/1R, don't think I can pay the price for just the SS 5711 so I'd go DD40.

DD WG with green dial is awesome. DD RG with chocolate dial is also beautiful. I respect PP for what they are but aesthetically they just don't appeal to me.

I recently had the same dilemma. I bought a WG DD40 with the silver striped dial about six months ago. This was my grail watch. It's is a great watch. The white gold definitely flies under the radar and it's a solid, substantial timepiece. THEN I started reading comments on the forum about the 5711. Well, I concluded that I HAD to have this watch. I flipped the DD40 for the 5711 (blue dial) and was immediately underwhelmed. I've owned two other PPs and, while I appreciate their quality, the 5711 seemed flimsy and unsubstantial. It didn't sing to me at all. I have flipped back to the DD40 and it just feels right to me. One man's opinion...

can't believe the patek costs that much. go with the gold rollie, although you should consider a white gold model. have you tried on the 5711? i tried one on and the proportions just didn't feel right. felt like an awkward watch with an uncomfortable bracelet but ymmv. try both on in person.

Same here. Not much beats the DD40 WG green...

This.

It's a tough choice between the 2 watches. DD40 is a lot of watch for the money but the 5711 will only gain value & is very easy to flip if required.

I went with the 5711 first then picked up WG DD40 green dial later on

The answer lies within.
DD is highly visible, attracts attention and have a presence, which nets a pile of compliments making you feel good.
The 5711 is highly regarded in the world of horology, a confident individual who is in the know. An occasional appreciative nod from likes is plenty satisfying.
If a decision needs to be asked, the PP5711 is not your watch.

I personally don't like the proportions of the Patek, sits larger than the DD. Between these 2 in question, i'd choose the DD (not my favourite combo though, that would be the DD36 YG Green dial)
