Yacht-Master 16622 Question

Hi Guys

After deciding to go with the new GMT IIc as my fourth Rolex purchase I am keen to later on add the Yacht-Master (16622).

My question is, how long would members anticipate this model to be available for before we either see changes our discontinuation altogether?

I'm not a fan of the Yach-Master 2, and would only want a 16622.

Seeing JJ's pics and thoughts on his 16622 has only swelled my desire to own one some day.

What are people's thoughts on the future of the 16622 YM?

Cheers

Jonathan

If I'm not mistaken, this watch was issued around 1999-2000 so it's less than ten years old. I own one and think it is a very handsome watch (coincidentally, I'm wearing it as I type this reply) but I know from conversations with dealers that it doesn't command as high a resale value as say the Subs or Daytonas.

One reason I've heard for this implied unpopularity is because of worry that once scratched, bezel replacement is an expensive business (which to me is ridiculous because I can hardly see the scratches on mine). Another is that it isn't really a sports model - even though it has a Triplock crown, it isn't rated to the Sub's depth and so isn't a real dive watch. As such, it's more a dress watch, which (supposedly) automatically lowers it in the pecking order of desirability.

I'm not sure if all of the above adds up to a higher probability that it might be discontinued though. I've not heard of any plans on this front. Hope this helps.

I think it's a beautiful watch and is on my list. Let's hope it enjoys a long run.

I own one, a SS/YG 40mm with a black MOP dial and it is superb! Glad it was my first Rolex.

Here is a good YM review. http://www.rolexreferencepage.com/ya...terreview.html

I haven't heard that it's going to be discontinued.

It's a relatively new model, so think it's here for the long term. The bezel is expensive to get replaced if seriously scratched - £1,000 brand new & £800 if you P/X yours. Prices as quoted to me from RSC Bexley, UK April 2008. Plus it's only one piece where other sports bezels in the range are two pieces.

But, the ace of the YM is it's so beautifully thin. If it had a thick case, it might be a scratch magnet but it's not. On my previous YM I did everything & I mean everything & it hardly had any marks.

Looking down on the YM it looks thick & from the side it's credit card slim.

If you look at the official Rolex website, the YM is listed under their "exceptional watches" range:

http://www.rolex.com/en/#/en/xml/col...-watches/index

The 40mm YM can certainly hold it's own against 44mm Panerai & 44mm AP as well.

(YM & Panerai taken from Paneristi site)

If you get one, you won't regret it.

Hi Jonathan,

I really wouldn't worry about its future. The YM Pt./SS is a classic unique model in the Rolex line-up. The only Rolex with a solid 950 grade Platinum dial and solid Platinum bezel + bezel insert.

It's a beauty and very, very dressy. You can never get tired of it, buddy. Go get one - you will NEVER regret it.

Best - JJ
