Perhaps this is the market reacting to the DSSD possibly being discontinued due to the release of the new Sea Dweller?

Let's start the rumor the LVc is going to be DC'ed. We should be able to get that puppy up to 14-16k by middle of next week...

It seems that most rolex conversations these days are only about $. It's a shame so many seem to focus mainly on that aspect.

bobs watches will buy your dssd for 7000.00
i found it interesting that last month they would but it for 6000.00 thats it. they probably have a shortage of people selling dssd to them. in my opinion talking about money and a rolex is not a bad thing. it is a luxury watch. |

That's the problem when something as stupid as a wristwatch can be generally perceived as a commodity when all it started out as was as a method of conveniently telling the time, which by fate developed(in some instances) into historic examples of a specific tool. In some ways it's understandable with all the hoo ha about the likes of Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, the various versions of vintage Subs that are now considered rare due to attrition and Rolex servicing policy. A little help from a fictitious character in a series of spy novels helps too. As a result some collectors found interest(legitimately) in them and all that goes with it. The rest became history. Funnily enough, some of the watches mentioned above weren't necessarily the best examples on the market. Obviously the Sub was ground breaking in its day and a really great watch. The Daytona for example failed miserably compared to the Speedy when tested by NASA even though they arguably came second in the suite of tests. I suppose in all fairness, the NASA tests were simply designed to find the best example available on the market. Now we have artificially inflated demand for some models simply due to a restricted supply by Rolex otherwise Rolex would simply be "just be another brand of wristwatch". |

The relationship people have with money is a major factor in the equation. Funnily enough, some people wouldn't understand the cost of a dollar or the value of a dollar. This would be the same here on this forum as in the community at large. I think that's why some people hold Rolex watches in such high esteem as a commodity but don't even know it, or why it may be so. Interestingly in a lot of cases lately, A lot of the discussion is related to speculation around the release of the new SD43 and models related to it in some way. As you say Rolex is a luxury watch manufacturer and it has arguably morphed into that in general terms. There were days in the distant past when a Rolex watch was regarded by people in the industry to be inferior to Omega. A Rolex watch is far more than the price paid and hard to quantify unless the watch has been owned for quite a while with a few services under its belt. Rolex as a brand really comes into its own when dealing with their reputable service network which is truly worldwide. On reflection it's the brand and its capability that stands apart from others, it's a point that was made all the more apparent to me when recently visiting a historic villa in which were housed a few very old clocks not of Rolex origin as they well and truly predated Rolex history. They were serviced and or maintained by Rolex as depicted on a small plaque discretely placed in proximity to the time piece. It gave me cause to pause and reflect on the matter of how is it that Rolex came to be the one company that are chosen to be responsible for this important work? It takes an understanding of the brand and its modern day capacity to come to a reasonable conclusion. IMO, that is the true essence of the brand which is lost on a lot of people. Especially when they start talking about money. |
