I notice watches all the time but I hardly ever figure it out. There are so many cheap quartz brands out there and from a distance they look like interesting mechanicals.
I think it should be socially acceptable to grab a strangers wrist and stare at their watch for a moment or two. Dogs do worse.

Yesterday I had to bring my Chihuahua to the vet for a check up and notice him (the vet and not Chuck my dog) wearing a TTDJ with a oyster band on his wrist. Now I know how he can afford it!!!! I helped pay for it!
