I'm just one of the few who tries to avoid the nickname game. I'd rather learn the actual ref/model name and go with that. Much more accurate and leaves no room for interpretation. IMHO.

Don't get me wrong, some nicknames are OK and have used here and there (platona, for efficiency). The Batmans, the hulks and the kermits, on the other hand, just don't do it for me.

Wow! Hope this is the new policy for the 214270 and not just a one-off exception because the new hands look so much better and transform the look of the watch.

The more important question is what happens if you have a non-lumed dial and need a replacement? Do they have any in stock or are they going to give you the new lumed dial?

If I said I have a Rolex 9083 (which I do) would you know what watch I was referring to? If I had said I had a Rolex UFO, you could easily conjure up the image since it looks like a flying saucer UFO. I think these names are great and much easier to remember than a sequence of digits.

I don't follow your argument as I am not familiar with either the model or the nickname. My google search of the Rolex 9083 did not match the image in my head of a Rolex UFO. Nice looking vintage, BTW. Kinda looks like my '73 Omega Geneve.

Call your watch whatever you deem necessary. These watches are worth a small fortune (some, a huge fortune) and the owner is entitled to do/call it whatever his/her heart desires.

I ran into the nickname when reading about the watch on Hondinkee. Once I saw the nickname, I promptly forgot the reference number. I have a hard time keeping track of reference numbers.

Our nervous systems seem to be developed to remember by association. It is natural and it is the way most things are remembered. Remembering a number is much more difficult for me, and others I suspect, than remembering something which has many associations.

Now that you've seen Rolex UFO and looked up the image, I'll bet you'll never forget what watch it is, but you may easily forget the reference number.

I'm fairly decent with numbers in general, being OCD and all. It's what I do for a living. Refence numbers, especially ones that I personally own or have caught my fancy, are pretty ingrained in my head. It gives my lazy brain some form of a workout.

Diff'rent strokes...

I will agree with you that this hobby is insanely addicting, even if you didn't say it.

Yes, my experience is that this is an immersive hobby that pulls one in. In fact, I'd say it is somewhat life altering. What is nice about watches is that you can wear them and enjoy the experience throughout the day. Try wearing a telescope (another one of my hobbies)! The other thing I like is the vintage experience. I can look down at my 6224 and think "the person who bought this, wore it around while reading about sputnik and our race to catch up with the Russians". Or my 1952 pre-explorer and it's connection to the Sir Edmund Hillary watch which summited Mount Everest.

Interesting. Appreciate this info. Have to give explicit instructions not to change the dial and the hands if dealing with RSC.

As was said, if I want a new "improved" 214270, I will buy one.

Rolex hand swap...

Why would Rolex change perfectly good hands? I find it hard to belive.
My explorer was less than 6 months old and gaining between 7 and 9 seconds per day, so I sent it away to be regulated.
On return It kept good time for 3 months and then started to be erratic again. It swung the other way, losing 5, 6, 7 seconds per day.
Now I'm not an accuracy freak, but I expect a new 'chronometer' watch to be within specs, this was way off!
So off it went to rolex again...
On return I noticed a grease mark on the hour hand, which again I find unacceptable from Rolex. So off it went again...
When it finally returned my watch had received a full service, new hands and was fully refinished as way of apology from Rolex.
6 months later and its back to gaining 7 to 9 seconds per day!
Its clearly a friday afternoon watch.
After 4 weeks of discussion with Rolex and Goldsmiths they have agreed to replace the watch for a new one.

Hopefully that has cleared things up for you....

Mark

Older thread but thought I'd mention. I had my hands and dial replaced last month, RCS Canada policy was they would only replace hands if done with a dial change to the newer lumed 369.

That's awesome. Did they make you do a full service?

No full service or polishing. They did regulate it, install new gaskets and pressure test it as part of the replacement.
