i never understood why

i never understood why the smurf has a flat blue dial. why?
the yellow gold and the two tone have sunburst blue dials, why not the white gold one?

is there some design reason? like white gold goes better with flat blue?

Well, nobody really knows except Mr. Rolex, and he's not saying.

But, in all seriousness, the YG and TT versions started out with the same flat blue as the smurf when the sub went to ceramic. And then, around 2013 I believe, they went to starburst. And the WG stayed with flat. So...maybe they were trying to give the WG its own identity apart from the YG line up? Just a thought.

The reason why i like the smurf is because of the flat blue. I think it looks much better.

Obviously, some prefer the flat. Others prefer the sunburst.

I first saw the smurf, and thought it was great, but I can't spend that kind of money on a watch. Then I saw the sunburst, and loved it, and bought it. After a couple of years, it got old, and the TT was a bit too flashy for me. Now I see the appeal of the flat blue, it's not quite so flashy and I'm going to propose that the kind of buyer that goes for the WG is going to be more conservative than the TT buyer, and so the different faces make sense from a marketing perspective.

⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ Agree! Good thoughts. I think the flat blue looks great/matches better with the WG.

Michael didn't say that you were or that the powder blue dial was conservative.....read the post Your Highness.

The powder blue dial was the first release and there was limited acceptance when comparing it to the previous sunburst blue dial.

I think Rolex realised this and changed back to the sunburst.

If all watch features were the same life would be boring.

I agree with the guys, above makes sense, but they did offer both powder/flat and starburst/sunburst dials on the YG for a time so would be a nice option to offer both on the WG too, fair's fair.
