Cancer wins again...claims my father

It is with a heavy heart I write this, it is a place or platform I never expected to write in, but with TRF and it's band of brothers, I decided to vent, simply vent. At 4:16am this morning, my father finally was claimed by pancreatic cancer which spread to his liver three short weeks ago. Only ten days ago I called an ambulance to my parents home and then the cancer decided to give him massive blood clots which then caused two strokes in his brain stem. It was all but over since then. I never thought it was this ugly, it was a long ten days of slow painful death, it was awful to witness day and night.

My father was well respected in his community and business community. He was successful and popular and touched everyone's soul who net him. I learned how to be a good person, good father and good husband. My work ethic was installed by him. I am in a shock and daze, I can't believe he is gone. I know this was going to happen at one point when he was diagnosed 18 months ago. I am worried for my mother as her soul mate of 48yrs is gone. My heart aches for my kids 9 and 7, especially the older one who cried earlier this morning. He is named after his grandfather.

I hope I didn't waste anyone's time by reading this post, but if any of you have any sensible advice how to cope, please let me know. Thank you all

Sorry for your loss Nick, I hope for peace for you and your family.

I lost my mother a few years ago to the same disease and can tell you the only thing that helps is being around your remaining family and time, those were the two most important things for me to move on.

I’m very sorry to hear of your loss Nick.

I lost my grandfather 2 years ago and he was my father figure in life having lost my father before I was born. It is a difficult road filled with moments of shear pain.

I’m of the belief that there is no real solution for grieving. Only advice I have is to let your emotions out. Don’t hold them in.

Best to you and your family in this most difficult time.

Heartfelt condolences Nicholas. Perhaps it's best to reflect upon the good times and the priceless insights/concerns that your father shared with you during your times together. As a family we have lost members (of an earlier generation) to the likes of strokes, cancer and congestive heart failure. It never gets any easier dealing with the loss of a cherished family member.

Without getting metaphysical or anything, chances are that you and your father will meet again (whether it's in a dream or another existence) and he'll be glad to see you. He is no longer suffering and I prefer to think of death as a rebirth of sorts. For now, his legacy and immortality rests with your thoughts and remembrances.

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through.

My father past away unexpectedly when I was 13. He and I were very close. All I can say is that while the pain will always be there, it will get better.

Be the strong one for your mother, kids, and the rest of your family. Even if you have to fake it until you make it, focus on getting them through this. It’s what your father would want, and it will help you in the end.

All the best,
David

My sincerest condolences to you and your family Nick.
There is no way to ease the pain but the passage of time. Take comfort in your family and in all of the wisdom your father taught you. You are who you are because of him.

I hope that you can quickly transition away from the pain of his passing to the obvious joy of the experiences you shared. I hope you can gain some comfort that he is at peace and that he had the 18 months to come to terms with the inevitable.

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers!

Beautiful sentiments BC, of which I wholeheartedly concur.

Nothing eases the pain but time, and the realization and relief that suffering for your father has ended. Be strong for your kids and your mother- they need you now more than ever.

My sincerest condolences.
