Summary: 18-yo gets a Ferrari F430 for birthday (thanks Pop!). Has it a week and terrible accident (high speed) claims his life and his passenger/cousin was critically burned.

Prolly wearing Gucci’s.......
Are you really going to joke about a dead teenager? I can't imagine many teenage boys refusing the Ferrari and not driving it. The parents put him in way too much car for his maturity and ability.

I used to buy Ferragmos and had a pair of Gucci(terrible quality) but once you try real goodyear welted shoes you won't buy a Ferragamo or Gucci anymore, you can get good deals on Crockett And Jones, Alden and Edward Green's etc., those are real shoes.

Smacking is now outlawed in Scotland and the rest of UK will follow and kids will become just so unruly. I wish I only got smacked when I was a kid, it was all different back then and most parents used "weapons".

I have to disagree here.
I'm 23 so not a kid anymore but I was not too long ago, I was never smacked, my parents taught me respect and discipline. If I want luxury items, well I gotta work for it.

And if I ever get kids and I'm gonna do it the same way. If you want nice things you'll have to work, end of story.

Nothing crazy, but definitely more than just a hand. Also weirdly only from my mother.

As for the kid...

Seriously? That's pretty intense (to say the least).

When it comes to corporal punishment I've heard some 'war stories' from guys who attended parochial/elementary schools. Some of those nuns could be pretty brutal when it came to disciplining what they perceived as bad or unruly behavior.

I said a bad word in Junior High and she whacked me with dad’s fly rod hard enough to break it. When Dad got home I got spanked for breaking his fly rod.

The good old days, when I feared my mom more than the police.

I can see smacking becoming outlawed all over the world in time, but for young kids who would otherwise run out onto the road or jump in the sea etc. I would not hesitate to smack them to make sure they listen and obey. It's a security issue for me and thus a vital tool for kids too young to reason with.

I'm not necessarily against smacking, I'd say it's situational and can be a way of getting kids to obey and listen should they be hard to handle.

As a general rule if you wake up to paramedics it's a good sign of abuse.

The more I ponder this particular brand of punishment, the scarier it seems. Getting hit across the head with a frozen piece of meat could have easily resulted in blunt-force trauma and/or serious concussion. Did the EMTs question your mother as to the nature/cause of your injury?

As for getting whacked with a fishing rod, its natural whip-like action would hurt like hell. I'm not sure which one would do the most damage (a fiberglass, graphite or split-bamboo rod) but if it happened to be one of your father's favorite split-bamboo fly rods, I could understand him getting upset. Nevertheless, he shouldn't have taken it out on you as it was your mother who chose it as the punishment tool.

It wasn't too long ago that Adrian Peterson got busted for breaking off a tree branch and whupping his kid. Parents have to use far more discretion these days when electing to go this route.

The only thing I never fully understood as a child was they said, "This is going to hurt me more than it will you."

When I was a kid (early 70's) your parents could all but kill you. The belt was a standard training tool for yutes everywhere.

Indeed, and don't forget corporal punishment was common at schools, many terrible stories of preteen kids at even the very top public schools having to wear nappies as a matter of routine to stem the bleeding, Churchill was one who was caned mercilessly and his father was Chancellor and tipped to be the next PM.

Hilarious.

Sounds about like me household.

Some kid do deserve to get smacked. But too many parents would botch the implementation

The other day, I saw a parent letting her kid run around a shop like a bored beagle. First she was laughing about it, then she started playing a video game on her phone and ignoring the kid. When the kid came back, she smacked her in the face for acting out.

So what exactly did the girl learn...That running around a store is good and makes mom smile? That it's bad and leads to punishment? That her mom's smartphone is her true top priority?
