does the 116610LN’s abundance ever get to you?

I’m going to be getting a black submariner date when I graduate in a few months (BBA in finance from an accredited NYC school) and as I walk through midtown, I see everyone else has one too. Even my dad has the same watch. I can’t help but think when I start work in the field, many people I’ll work with will also have the same watch. Is this conventional thinking for the first time rolex owner? However, I assume that once I get it, I won’t really care

Can anyone who wears a 116610LN chime in? :)

Considering that the sub is the most copied watch in history, unless you have a trained eye, you wont really know what youre seeing anyway. I would redirect your thoughts back to anticipation and excitement of you future Rolex. This is the best part of getting one.

There's a reason they're so popular.

Honestly, it does sometimes... I'm in NYC and everyone has one. But then I think about it and realize there is a reason they're so popular.

Get it, wear it, and love it.

You are one of 7.6 billion people in the world, does that make you any less special or unique in your mind?

All that to say, I don't understand your concern. If you're worried about other people having the same watch as you then you may be in the wrong place. You either appreciate the watch for its own merits or you don't.

Maybe there's a new requirement coming to live in NYC that you have to have a sub?

If so, you better get one now.

I would go with your gut and buy what excites you. I completely understand your hesitation about this and it’s exactly why I went with the LVc instead of the LN. I wanted something that wasn’t seen every day and the green really impressed me with the sunburst dial. The LN is fantastic in its own right but it just didn’t grab me as much.

I understand where you’re coming from with the question. I think it’s natural not to want something special to you to become so common that you habituate to its beauty (I choose not to buy into the assumption that you just want to be “special“ or unique—Unnecessarily cynical take). Having said that, it is my daily, and I find myself feeling very happy for other guys who have it on their wrist— which isn’t nearly as common as you might think when it comes to the sub-C—because there’s little fun in enjoying something so great all by yourself. I say go for it, it’s a masterpiece in terms of classic good looks, history, engineering, ruggedness, comfort, and utility (that’s a lot of adjectives!).

I get it. For instance if you buy a car that you see at every intersection, it takes away a little bit from the ownership experience, IMO. It is nice to find something you like that isn't quite so mainstream, whether it's a car model you don't see every day, or a color. Or in the case (no pun intended) of a watch, maybe you want something that looks like a Sub, but is a little bit different. A green one, a SeaDweller, etc.

Or maybe you just want a Sub and the thing that will make this one unique is that it's yours.

Try going green.

My thoughts are buy what you want/like, that is why I went with the green sub.

Then get out of NYC, if they are all sheep there to your myopic eye, don't join the herd.

Some of this is they made the black Sub forever. Then there is the black date and black no-date. If it bothers you now (valid observation), it may bug you even more after spending money on one. My personal taste have always steered me away from the ubiquitous black Sub. Its always going to be a default Rolex color/watch combo for the masses. Its a classic. You have to decide if your personal style aligns with this.

Yup, those are my exact thoughts, having been in Hong Kong for a while, when everybody seems to have one.

If you want to be a little different - do what I did, and get a Hulk!

In addition to the Sub’s relative affordability, it is a iconic classic that holds its value very well, is well proportioned, and versatile. I had similar feelings that motivated me to flip my Sub-C for new toys. In the end, I find myself going back to the old staple and will be investing in one in the near future. I miss the simplicity and the purity that is the Submariner.

That's one of the reasons that drove me to get the Sub ND instead. The hulk is a good option but if it's too flashy get a BLNR which is a little more unique.
