Case of Buyers Remorse...

Hi everyone.

Just joined the Rolex club, the Sub club to be exact.
Now I've got a bad case of buyers remorse.

I was so excited when the Sub arrived.
BNIB with stickers still applied and everything.
I tried the watch on one time and that was it.

Have had the watch for for over one week, taken out one time,
put back in the box, and put away.

Anyone else get hit with buyers remorse?
If so, what did you do?
You return the watch or flip it?

did you buy it sight unseen? What happened to the previous desire for a Sub, which you must’ve had since you did acquire it.

Maybe you built up overly high expectations. I suggest you neither return nor flip. Wear it for a few weeks, give it a chance first

Perhaps the watch doesn't sing to you.
Or you find the watch underwhelming in reality.

There's nothing wrong with this scenario.
Chalk it all up to experience and move on.

Remorse is quite a strong word but if you dont feel good wearing her then get rid,,,,lifes too short to be feeling that way over a watch,,,,
much respect for your honesty and good luck with whatever you decide to do,,,,,

You enjoyed the hunt and the anticipation...nothing wrong with that. I’ve had a few watches that I experienced let down yet they grew on me (Daytona) - and also some that never did and I moved them along. Personally I don’t like “blingy” watches (new) but enjoy them once they develop some character and don’t have the ‘fresh out of the box’ look. Maybe that’s you- or maybe you really wanted something else but got the sub instead. It’s a great and iconic reference that every larger collection should have. But if you have a small collection or that elusive “1 Watch person” have what sings to you. Give it a few weeks and wear it...you’ll know.

My remorse has nothing to do with the watch.
I really love the watch, everything I was expecting and then some.

My remorse is from the cost.
I just can't justify the cost on myself.
Not sure if that made sense.
The cost on just one person.

I keep thinking boy, with this money the family could go on a vacation or
something along those lines.
Where the money is spent on the family and not just on me.
I feel selfish.
I hate that feeling.

Either way give it more than a week. Sellers remorse is also a thing.

Oh so more accurately you feel guilty about spending that kind of coin.
Whether it be on your good self or not?

Did you actually desire the watch and really want to have one or did you just buy it because it was a Rolex and thought you should have one because it's so popular?

I was a little bit of the same. Hope I Don t offend anyone, but every time I held a Rolex in my hand. I would look at it and think, this is a lot of money for a watch that simple looking on the outside...and with not a lot of design change in decade.
I will go on ..and move on.
Thinking I cannot spend that kind of money. .. a few years later like ..7..I started reading this forum..and window shopping. .then I finally bought an SD 43..after having it..then he excitement went away, went away...and I thought shut that a lot if money for a plain looking watch...but it s growing on me. I know what Rolex represents, and we are the lucky ones who can afford it.
That watch will live with me and go on to my kids...that s priceless to me...I love watches..and that s part of me.
I will probably buy a second one in the future.
They are simple but beautiful. The quality seems premium. That watch always shine..put it on your wrist for a week and then decide..but wear it.
You have to give it some time...those piece will last forever. Don t think of the price. Think of the joy you get from it..and think that you are only here for a little while. So get the best if u can afford it...u cannot take money in the grave. Enjoy everyday as it comes. .down the road you can always sell that watch.

I know exactly what you mean and have had the same feelings in the past. If you feel something or somebody else is missing out instead then maybe this isn't the best allocation of funds but if you can afford it but just feel it is a lot of money(which it is for a lot of folk) then enjoy it knowing that it almost money in the bank that you can liquidate if you want or need to.

Case of Buyers Remorse...

Is it the SubC ND or SubC Date? Maybe you regret not getting the date?

Did you try wearing it more often, it’s a real beauty! But no I didn’t get remorse, especially with the SubC. I knew I wanted it and it is the most iconic watch. I even picked the timeless black and still don’t regret not having the green.

Give it a chance, you probably regret spending all that money you are afraid to wear it, but nothing wrong with being a little generous to yourself and treating yourself. We all need ME time sometimes.

Perfectly reasonable reaction and the reason I waited until the kids were grown and away before buying mine.

I'm about to buy another and both will go to my children when I die.

When that happens, they'll have a part of me to look at every day and hopefully remember how much I love them.

It isn't just a watch. It is a piece of you to share just like memories from a family vacation.

Ah, exactly! I understand.

Not sure what to tell you but if it bothers you that much then return it or sell it and move on, it is just a watch.

Perfectly normal. I’ve bought cheaper and much much more expensive watches than a sub and felt that brief pang of regret in where I have questioned the sanity of it all. It quickly diminishes... enjoy your watch. In 6 months you won’t five it a second thought and in 5 years it will pay back the money you spent on it if you decide to sell.

I am a lot like you. I don't really spend money on myself and would much rather take the family someplace that they will always remember.

I can tell you this, I have purchased and sold dozens of Rolex sport watches. The good thing about them is you won't lose to much cash selling. That is how I justified in my head buying them.

These days I just have a Explorer II, which is my favorite Rolex sport watch made. I have owned them all over the past 15 years and I can say the only Rolex I even want to own is my orange hand Explorer II.

Rolex is a brand I really don't want any part of these days. I have owned so many different brands over the years and I have realized that I enjoy wearing a watch that cost half the price of a Rolex more than wearing a Rolex. I used to hide my Rolex watches under long sleeve shirts so they would not be noticed, that is not enjoying the watch. I think that is why I love my Explorer II, it does not scream ROLEX. If you can't enjoy wearing your sub, sell it. Buy something half the price and enjoy it for life.

It is hard to give advice because I feel like you will figure this out yourself. All I know is that you can pick up a Omega or a IWC for half the price and enjoy it just as much as your sub, and still take the family on a vacation.

If the cost is not sitting well with you, I’d suggest giving it a couple of weeks to see if you begin to feel more comfortable with the watch and the opportunity cost that comes with purchasing it. And, if not, do not have any regrets about selling it and moving on.

Luxuries like mechanical watches are meant to bring happiness and if they aren’t then there’s no need to force it. There are other amazing pieces out there at prices well below that of a Rolex that can also bring great satisfaction.

I totally understand how you feel. I think for me at least it would be important to determine the source of those feelings. As long as I’m not hurting my family financially in any way I don’t feel bad. At least not after the initial buyers remorse.

I really look at most of my watch purchases as a transfer on my balance sheet from cash to a watch rather than an actual purchase of an item that will quickly lose value. The reality is if you buy right or at least wait long enough you’re most likely not going to lose money.

Personally I hate to spent a lot of money on holidays. After two weeks and having spent 10k thats it. I rather have a watch which I can enjoy the whole year around.

If you have food on the table, roof above your head, kids education taking care of, time for yourself

Some really interesting thoughts expressed here. I think most of us have experienced those pangs from time to time. I feel them, but tell myself that life is indeed short, you should treat yourself occasionally, and provided you’re not jeopardising the family, then you’re justified in the purchase. Yes, the watch is expensive, and I appreciate money is relative, but it’s not like you’re a Lange Zeitwerk or Patek minute repeater. Your purchase sounds appropriate in your circumstances. Thus, put the watch on and enjoy it. You’ve likely earned it.

If you just let it sit, unused, the feeling gets worse. You are just wasting money at that point. If you wear it and enjoy it you get a return on your investment so to speak.

I have sold many Rolexes due to that feeling, but I always come back. When I think of the money I've really wasted selling and re-buying.... if you want it, just wear it. You'll spend more money if you sell and re-buy once you realize you really want it.

I just went through a little bit of that myself. It didn't last very long though. I love watches and always considered buying a Rolex but the cost always gave me second thought. The urge continued until last month when I went into my local AD and figured it couldn't hurt just to look. Well looking proceeded to purchasing and I went away with an OP 39. Very simple but elegant. It's a beautiful watch but for the first week I kept thinking I just spent 5k on a watch. Being able to afford it wasn't the issue. Just the thought of spending 5k was difficult to think about. But like I said it didn't last long. I'm over it now. I've always had these feelings when spending. Guess deep down I'm a tight wad with money.

Now I going through my next challenge. Since I wear or use what I purchase. Cars, watches. The clasp is getting scratched. This happens on all my watches. I don't like it but it's unavoidable. I'm getting over that as well.
