I'm in my 20s and didn't start wearing a watch consistently until about 1.5 yrs ago. That being said, I wear it for two reasons:
(1) the practicality aspect, which allows me to check the time discreetly during meetings (2) the enjoyment aspect, where I simply love this little analog machine on my wrist. Such a refreshing thing to look at in a world where everything is tech based.

The question itself has a different meaning than before the era being surrounded by the time on our phones, computers, cars, etc. These days, it's usually a different glance to our computers or cars or pickup a phone and hit the home button.
I wore watches from 1974 age 8 till about age 45 when the batteries and straps broke and I did not "need" a time device on my wrist. Then an ex-girfriend bought me an Explorer for an early 50th BF gift. However I've always appreciated art as simple elegance and the wonders of mechanical devices. I wear a Rolex Explorer and an Omega Speedmaster Pro because I do like the "old time" feel of looking at my wrist. I love the mechanical aspect that this little machine is so accurate, yet not perfect. They are beautiful. And these two have historical significance tracing back to Everest and the excitement of NASA from when I was a boy. I chose these to as an Historical homage. I do wish I had more friends to share this passion. I went hiking with some buddies this weekend and they had very nice Shinola and Casio watches. But they just went "meh" when I tried to explain my passion and the history of the Rolex Explorer and Omega Speedmaster. These guys are also in my age range at age 45. They both earn far more than me and have no problem spending money on high quality gear, but they both just don't have an affinity for high end watches. They are slightly more in the quartz generation than I am, as I recall my first watches in the 1970's were manual wind. I find it interesting that almost no one comments on my nice watches. It does not bother me and might even make me feel more down to earth. So... many years ago this question could be asked "Why do you feel the need to wear a wristwatch," and now the question is "Why do you prefer to wear a wristwatch?" I've enjoyed reading the responses. |

Other than to tell the time. Wearing a watch is a reminder for me, a reminder of my mortality and to make use of every second I’ve been given! Money can be made, but time is lost forever !

I wear what I build and service, so a watch feels more than just a watch to me: it feels like a part of me that I dedicate my attention and knowledge on.

When it comes to Rolexes (and certain individuals), perhaps as a sign of success?

The other day at Starbucks the barista asked me the date. I had my iPhone in my hand, yet I looked at my BLRO for the date instead of the phone. Maybe it’s a generational thing, but I’ve worn watches (of all kinds) throughout my life.

My first watch was a water resistant Timex divers styled watch when I was about 5 years old. I remember how cool it was that I could keep it on while I bathed. I wore it to know the time. Many years later the fascination with watches hasn’t diminished and I still wear them to know the time. I don’t bathe with them now.

I wear one cause it's easier to wear one than to carry around a sun dial, especially on cloudy days.

I came of age before cell phones, so I'm used to checking the time on a watch. Secondly, punctuality is an obsession with me. Having a watch also makes me feel more prepared. I feel lost not knowing what time it is.

I'm old school, I don't use my mobile whenever possible and have it switched off most of the time, so a watch is essential to me for the time. So it is a pure tool watch for me, and I'm one of those who hates not knowing what the time is, even if I can guestimate to within fifteen minutes, but at times I have been way off and then I feel almost like I have blacked out.

It makes me feel complete and in control. Can’t stand not seeing the time on my wrist. I feel naked without it. Now in my 50’s, that ain’t likely to change. As for Rolex timepieces, I feel have worked hard in my life and I deserve them. It is a personal reward that gives me great satisfaction.

Purely practical, when my doctor asks me what day it is and or the date, I can respond.

So I'm sure I get a full 30 minutes before the happy ending.

so people know i am more important than them?
in seriousness. i associate it with class, no real reason to have a fine time piece. but since early age. i associate nice watch with success. my rolex reminds me i have responsibility and that i have places to be. it gets me home on time, reminds me of important events.

It puts the Rolex on the skin, or it gets the hose again.
