Latest internet challenge - eating laundry pods?!

A buddy of mine from the sunshine state forwarded this article to me.
I'm not sure to believe this is even real, but incredibly sad if true...

Ok if you wash them down with a little smart water.

It would appear to me that this is a satirical internet meme, as the article suggests.

Even teenagers know that laundry detergent isn't palatable.

Toddlers probably don't.

You're probably right Grady, but what started as a joke could still have serous consequences if imitated. Kids have been known to try stupid things, but I suppose it's natural selection at work...

"Dr. Alfred Aleguas Jr., managing director of the Florida Poison Information Center in Tampa, said if someone mimicked the College Humor video, they could find themselves in a "life-threatening" situation. Swallowing even a small amount of the highly-concentrated detergent found in pods (which can happen if people bite it and spit contents out), can cause diarrhea and vomiting. In some cases, some of the detergent could even find its way into the lungs and cause breathing difficulties."

Many long years ago, I was at my girlfriend's house when I found a sample bottle of lemon-scented liquid dish detergent in a bag hanging from her front door.

I took one look at it and thought it was concentrated lemon juice and I put it in the refrigerator since my girlfriend went through a couple of bottles of lemon juice a week, although she used the ones shaped like lemons.

Fortunately, she actually read the label on the bottle and didn't ingest the detergent, but a week or so later, there was an article in the paper about a bunch of people, who like me, didn't read the label well enough, and did actually use the product in their beverages, a mistake they immediately realized.

So, things like this can happen and I do seem to recall that the brand did change their label to make it more clear what they were actually selling.

People have mistakenly injested these products thru ignorance or mental infirmity (as with the very young and very old) or accidentally through misindentification as your situation Grady, but this is the first I'm hearing of deliberate and intentional ingestion.

Reminds me of the kids snorting bath salts or huffing deodorant spray. At least they had a goal of getting high. This situation, if real, seems like a generation starved for media attention.

Work in ED/ICU medicine, people injest these particularly kids.

Very serious and high potential for death.

What the hell? I really hope it isn't real but sadly wouldn't be totally surprised if it was.

There is some crazy stuff on the internet. Unfortunately some people do what they read without understanding or considering the consequences or perhaps have issues that impair their judgement. I don’t recall the name of the so called game but there was one circulating recently that implored people to do all kinds of risky things. Several had been hurt or died as a result of taking the dares.
