Santa Barbara mud slides....

Looks pretty horrific.

How bad is it? Is the city itself hit?

The city of Santa Barbara is fine. Montecito, a small affluent town right next to Santa Barbara is totally wrecked. 100+ homes gone, many people dead and still a lot of people are missing (most likely dead).

Montecito is a great, little quaint town with some nice shops and restaurants. It sucks that this happened, but after the fires, it is no surprise.

When are you planning to visit?

Saw pictures of it. What a horror. Very saddening, prayers for the people affected.

Next week, just for a night. My wife has second thoughts now though....

Very sad series of events for California. Our thoughts and prayers to all who are affected.

You will be ok in Santa Barbara. On one hand, it’s sad to visit a place and enjoy yourself knowing that people just a few miles down the road are struggling, but Santa Barbara also depends on tourists. If people don’t visit, the local economy suffers. I’d go and support the local economy.

The 101 is currently closed by Montecito. I have no idea when it will reopen. There are other ways to pass through, though. Just FYI.

I spent a day in Montecito over the Christmas break. We have done so annually for the past 5 years. Just gutted by what happened. We basically were spending time at San Ysidro Ranch and down on Coast Village Road and down the waterfront. I can identify many of the buildings and even homes in the photos. The area we were in is now under mud from the ash of the fires.

Prayers for those affected and for their losses. It looks like it will really take a long time to recover. I read that many of the homes don't have flood insurance, which is needed in this case to file for losses.

Hope they find the missing to be OK, but not looking good from what I have read.

Edit: x2 on supporting the community by traveling there, as mentioned above. We were 50-50 on going there this year, but decided if we should spend money there, as it is a tourism area. Very glad we did in retrospect, and saw it one more time before it was decimated.

It’s horrible and my thoughts and prayers are with those affected.

This is par for the course in coastal SoCal and will only get worse. They are building more and more houses on the hills and cliffs all along Southern California. The fires come with the Santa Ana winds in fall and and then there is no vegistation when the rains come. Laguna was hit hard years ago and there are minor mudslides all along the coast. The more houses are built the more people will be affected.

Horrible destruction. Seems surreal.
