Totally agree with this. Get a nice blue or rhodium DJ41 and you’ve got something that is a great go anywhere option and is extremely satisfying to look at on the wrist all day. I see what feels like 40,000 Subs a day on banker bros so they just seem too common to me so maybe I’m biased...but the DJ is more refined in my eyes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You future husband seems to prefer a dressy watch, so DJ is the logical choice. He'll love it. If he'd prefer the TT Sub, you'd have heard it from him as it's an iconic watch.

so my AD was able to find a 87/88 day date running about 12k (states he can budge on the pricing) with box and papers. haven't looked at the condition of the watch yet. does this seem reasonable?

Datejust is a better all-round watch. You can wear it anywhere.

Datejust 41 vs Sub
I’ve got a 7” wrist and honestly believe the SubC just looks too big and awkward. I know this isn’t a popular opinion, but understand this is coming from a guy who happily wears a speedy pro (41.25) and has owned HULK, BLNR, SMURF and 114060. The supercase with its square lugs just wears big and awkward. Frankly I think it looks awkward on most people. Even bigger watches, with slimmer lugs, tend to look and wear better.
Like myself previously, I believe many buy 6 digit ceramic references for a variety of factors, most of which have nothing to do with how the watch wears on the wrist. YMMV, etc. Just one option. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

The blue sun ray dial Sub gets my vote. One of the most beautiful dial of all time in Watch industry

I went DJ36 for 15 years; Sub for 4 weeks; DJ41 last July.
Sub just didn't do it for me, as it seems neither did it do it for your man. The Sub is just so common. I mean, look at most men and they're wearing a Sub "lookalike" watch. DD is a much better choice so well done to him for making a choice of something that "sings" to him. THAT is the key, not buying a watch because someone here prefers it. That's the real reason I ended up with a Sub, because I went all SHEEP-like and followed the trend rather than following my own passion for the watch I SUBsequently kept coming back to. |

I would do more research on what he wants. Not everyone likes sport/tool watches. DJ41 is comfy and not as flashy, so those may be important factors. Why buy something he will not want to wear.

If you go for a Day-Date, I would recommend going for the double quick-set 18238. They made this reference in 1988. Make sure the bracelet is tight!!! There are many available for a great price but you don't want a stretched bracelet.
If going with something newer, then I would recommend the TT Sub. Either 116613LB blue or 116613LB black. If he prefers the dressier fluted bezel look then go with a nice TT Datejust 41 YG with champagne stick dial. It's a classic look and since he likes Day-Dates he will probably love this combination! The DJ41 is perfect for swimming as well. You can even dive with the watch. A 200m-300m depth rating is not necessary for recreational diving. The 100m on every Rolex is enough. Most people never go below 30m!!! The Subs will hold their value better than either the DJ41 or whatever DD when buying new but this depreciation is taken out of the picture if buying pre-owned or new for a good discount from a grey dealer. This is a really classic look!

If it is his first Rolex, I would vote for Sub.
As a 30s it is a very nice daily watch!

Two-tone bluesy sub is my grail watch. Having said that, my first Rolex was a DJII, as I feel it is a better all-around watch than the sub. It dresses up well but serves just as good in jeans and a t-shirt. With his grail being a presidential, I'd have to recommend the DJ41.
And given the choice between a brand new DJ41 and the old presidential that your dealer found, I would take the new DJ41 everyday of the week. Hate to say it, but I second the above post: just a bit too "old man's watch" - especially for a 30-year old. |

The DJ41 TT is I think a stunning watch.
I bought the RG Choc dial when it came out first but ended up moving it on as it wasn't for me as a daily wearer, but if you reckon it will suit him then IMO go DJ41 as its gorgeous. |

Just a thought, but I’d it at all possible to consider going to your AD and letting him try the, on? You might be very surprised at which one he lands on ... so might be

if only I could as it's for a surprise wedding/30th gift, I've mentioned both to him in the past (sub and DJ) and he's liked both.

Definitely DO NOT buy one and surprise him. He'll say he loves it, but chances are he would choose something different given a trip (or two) to the AD to try some on. So he'll be "stuck" with NOT the watch he really wants so as not to upset you. He'll have to suffer this for a few years until he says "I fancy a change." So, why not surprise him with the WHOLE choosing/buying experience. The tea/coffee/champagne/chocolate hob nobs/choice of Rolex gifts AND the fawning staff at the AD! This is NOT to be missed!! Just say you're taking him shopping as the surprise, and then drive to the AD and watch his face as you "drag" him inside for HIM to choose HIS watch! Last year both my wife and I chose our new Rolexes and we didn't end up with what we thought we would. So... his saying he likes two watches equally isn't good enough when there are hundreds of Rolex watch permutations to choose from. Mark my words! |

I was in a similar predicament when I bought my first Rolex. I ended up the DJ 41. I love that sparkle when you get the fluted bezel in good lighting.

Go for the Sub. It's a class act. Even people that don't usually like TT admit it's a great piece.
The Glidelock is the best new feature. It literally takes a few seconds to resize the bracelet. Rolex should (and probably will) start adding the feature to all professional watches. Good luck, here's mine: [ATTACH]941468[/Attach Best Mark Sent from my SGH-I547C using Tapatalk |
