As others have said, service the movement only and leave everything else as is.

I will echo what has been said. Leave it alone.....................UNLESS it bothers you and then do what you like. At the end of the day its about what makes you happy and NOT what we say. Its your watch.

I agree with others above on not replacing the dial and hands. I think a light polish is okay.
Btw, my DJ from my father is also at the Dallas RSC right now. Very similar watch except it has the silver linen dial. Congrats on the EXP! |

Keeping everything original cannot be emphasized enough.
I would go for a light RSC polish once, leave the crystal unless severely damaged, the watch will outlast you. Someone somewhere in future will thank you.

It might be best to leave the dial and hands original but servicing it is a good idea

Thanks again everyone! Decided to do full service on the movement, new crown (they said it was mandatory, and I’d rather not mess with this for waterproof reasons), and new acrylic.
RSC was ok with keeping original hands and dial. I asked them to slightly retouch the finishing. As I don’t plan on selling it, I don’t really care about keeping sharp edges on the lugs. Will post pix when I get it back in about 3 weeks hopefully! |

Forgot to ask... my AD quoted me $1050 for a full movement service and new crown. Is that a reasonable amount? Next time, I’m dealing directly with the RSC...it was a mistake sending it in through an AD. :(

The overhaul on a Ladies OP my wife used to wear came to $925 from RSC. That includes a crown and a crystal (crystal was $135). Not as much work involved in an OP as in a DJ - so hope that helps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'd personally stay away from polishing (unless it's been polished by a 3rd party incorrectly already), and absolutely no dial/hand change.
The resale value talk aside, these watches are unpolished only once, and looks like you've got a very nice piece there. If I were you, I'd get the movement serviced, crystal and crown replaced (if it fails pressure test), retain those original crystal and crown if possible, pressure tested with new crystal and crown, and leave the case finish, hands and the dial untouched. I'd definitely work with an RSC directly or find a qualifying independent watchmaker (hopefully someone reputable with vintage pieces) for better pricing and quicker turnaround. |

My opinion is to keep it in original condition. I have learned that original condition helps maintain the romance of what the watch has been through. Polishing out scratches or repairing a dial unnecessarily will "remove" certain memories that watch has in it. If only it could have a recording device like a black box that monitored each time the watch was scratched or bumped, you could see parts of your father's life previously unseen by you. For now, you can look at scratches and dings, etc., and imagine what he was doing when the watch acquired that minor damage. It sounds like it would be an enjoyable exercise over the years.

Dad’s Rolex. What to do?
Leave it the way your Dad had it would be my answer. Wear it with pride and think of him as you wear it.
Congratz on the new Explorer!
