Submariner vs. Sea-Dweller vs. Deepsea

I put a deposit on a Sub, which my AD is locating right now. In the meantime I looked at the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea on a Rolex catalog and noticed they are nearly identical to the Sub, but larger. I like the idea of a larger watch!

My local AD doesn't have any Deepsea or Sea-Dwellers at the store right now so I'm unable to compare them side by side with the Sub. Are the 3mm and 4mm difference in size noticeable?

I'm not a diver, so performance is not important to me. It's all about the size. I would also appreciate any thoughts on value retention on these vs. the Sub.

I have a Sea-Dweller 43mm and have tried both the sub and Deepsea and the difference in size is definitely noticeable on the SD43 & Deepsea compared to the Sub, particularly the Deepsea, it is a much thicker and heavier watch.

The SD43 is also thicker than the Sub so sits a bit higher on the wrist as it has a protruding caseback but the bracelet is also wider on the SD43 keeping the proportions in check, SD43 is also heavier than the sub but not as heavy as the Deepsea.

Yes. Each mm is very noticeable. I highly recommend that you try each watch on, and decide which one is the right fit for you.

I bought a SD 43 red today. I got to look at a Sub and Deep Sea. The SD is significantly beefier watch, larger diameter and thicker than the Sub. The Deep Sea is even larger. I ultimately decided on the SD because of the new movement, and the fact that the Deep Sea will be getting the new movement as was announced at Basel. But I don't think you can go wrong with any of them!

They do wear differently, and you should try each on to get a real sense of your preferences. The SD43 proportions are the best, but with the new Deep Sea just released, I'm sure it makes a strong case on that front. For me, the extra thick lugs make the Sub case look disproportionately large on its bracelet. Just my personal feelings on these models.

Pretty big difference in size between the 3 of them.

Do you like big watches? Then go with a SD43 or Deep Sea. Then take into account your wrist size and preference. The Deep Sea is huge while the SD43 is just a big watch and much more suited for a daily watch.

The SD43 doesn't fit under my cuffs which are pretty tailored/fitted. The Deep Sea is not going to fit under any cuff that is somewhat properly fitted.

The SD43 is the best balance of an amazing watch, tooly diver, and hefty size while not being too big. The Submariner will be the most versatile and dressiest. The Deep Sea is simply a beast. I love it but it's just too big for me and I couldn't wear it everyday.

The Deepsea will not disappoint if big is what you’re looking for.
The SD43 is larger than the Submariner, quite comfortable, and has great wrist presence.
The Submariner is the most comfortable of the 3.

It comes down to what you value most.

The DSSD is very large at 44mm, unless of course, you have a huge wrist. SD43 sits taller than the sub, sub however is your safest bet. Being an owner myself, I can say it slips under the cuff nicely. (the sub)

I'd look at a 116600 if I were you, just throwing it out there. 40mm, slightly taller, more wrist presence, matte dial, no cyclops. I love it. And yes, 3mm and 4mm does make a huge diff to the overall look of these watches.

Well said, of the 3 models listed I'd look hard at the SD43 or DSSD. Currently the DSSD (original black dial) is likely to present the most 'bang for your buck' model at present. Its also more challenging to pull off as a daily wearer. I have for nearly 5 years, however I own and run my own company...so there is that...overall between the 3 you really can't go wrong with any of them IMO.

Eeech. There is real merit to considering if one model is too big/long, or too tall ...or too heavy. Try to wear one of each before you commit. Looking at these three, chances are you can flip whichever through this forum if it loses your interest in the coming months and not lo$e anything but heartache.

Try them on if you can. The SDDS looked incredibly thick on my wrist while the SD43 fit me well.

That said, I am still on a Hulk and GMT list...

I’m not going to reiterate what has been said already, what I’ll leave you with is I upgraded my Sub to the SD43 and couldn’t be happier with the decision. To be honest, the Subs proportions are off when compared to the SD43s. But if I wasn’t a part of TRF I probably would have never noticed, outside of the Sub being square...but I’m glad I did nonetheless. To help illustrate some of the differences in size I’ll offer the below two pictures I took when deciding whether or not to trade in the Sub. The SD43 is my daily watch now.

I own a Sub and a Deepsea, both are great, I don't find the DSSD too large for daily, even business wear, the sub is a little more under the radar (here in SFLA) depends on your wrist and what you want to say. Or you could buy all three and sell the ones you end up wearing less for prob no loss if you buy at MSRP.

I haven’t tried on a SD43 yet. But the DSSD was just way too big for me. It’s s beautiful watch but just not for me. My sweet spot is 40mm so I feel very comfortable with the Sub.

Bt122, I just measured my wrist with a measuring tape and got 7.2. From all your replies, it sounds like the SD43 is the way to go.

I have owned them all and the SD43, for me, is the perfect Rolex Diver. The case size, bracelet, dial, red text and even the cyclops work for me.

At 7.2 I think you are definitely in the SD43 range. To me, it works best like this:

<7" Sub
7"-8" SD43
>8" DSSD

Not to say you need to be in those number, just seems to my eyes those are the sweet spots for those models.

The new Sea Dweller is just an amazing watch. If you are comfortable with the size and weight you will absolutely love it. Good luck in you search!

Assuming your wrist is relatively flat, then I think the SD43 will be the right fit for you. My wrist is about the same size.

I picked up my SD43 this week and love it. It's a big watch and a watch that will let you know it's there. That said, it only took about an hour to get used to the size. It will not fit under my shirt cuffs - but that's fine and I knew that before I bought it.

No one has a crystal ball on "value retention."

But there is one fact: if you don't buy the watch that you like best (as opposed to what some think may hold it's value), your purchase will have zero value for your wearing pleasure.

If 43 mm is not an issue, go for the SD43, its the sweet spot.
