Any other book lovers out there....

... if so what are your favourites and why?

I have deliberately avoided the word "collection" as, though I have many wonderful books, I couldn't call myself a collector. Everything I have, I bought to read and if I haven't done so already, sincerely intend to. I love learning new things, sometimes about areas I know a little about sometimes about totally different aspects of life. I love the escapism of fiction, inhabiting other worlds, other times and getting to know new people through the medium. I love tactile sensations of looking up reference books. My favourites?

1) The Junior Officer's Reading Club by Patrick Hennessey. For a long time I aspired to be an army officer but was denied the opportunity for health reasons. This book vividly describes the author's service both in war zones and day-to-day. The quality of the writing allows an element of vicarious living.

2) The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. Biology has fascinated me since I was a child. As a biology graduate I complacently thought I understood evolution. Years later when I was stuck in a job that didn't really stretch me, I picked this up to stimulate my brain. Frequently I found myself gasping in sheer wonder. It opened my eyes to the complexity of evolution and totally changed my mind. The way it is written makes it very accessible to intelligent non-experts as well as those with some background knowledge so as such I have recommended it to many people since reading it.

3) Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. Life long Bond lover. This was the original (and probably one of the best) Bond novels. Enough said!

Yes. Non fiction only. Mostly military history. History in general.

I enjoy books a great deal and have always found certain times of history, biographies and autobiographies very interesting. In the last few years I have also gotten into design history and photographs of nature and buildings.

Fan of the classics here - favorite book is Count of Monte Cristo. Got everything a man should love to read about in it and a few life lessons tucked in there too.

I'm an avid reader, both fiction and nonfiction.
One of my favourite books as of recent years is The Martian by Andy Weir. And no, the movie doesn't do it any good, I thought that was quite terrible.

Interesting. Huge reader here too. Mostly sci-fi and fantasy. I too love the book, but I also loved the movie. I thought they did a super job.

I just finished the Red Rising trilogy. It was magnificent.

I read at least 2-3 books every couple of weeks. Avid reader. Since the iPads came out, made my library much easier to carry.

Current read is Enlightenment Now by Steven Pinker. Highly recommended.
I tend to read non-fiction books that make one think.

Seth,

There is a newe fourth book to Red Rising called Iron Gold. Pretty solid albeit a little different due to time lapse. Agreed as to the original trilogy and sci-fi is not my usual cup of tea.

I actually just downloaded it. I’m taking a breather before I start tho. Likely tomorrow.

I’m actually much bigger into fantasy. I don’t typically pick up sci-fi aside from the classics.

Absolutely loved this. This writer is stupendous.

Glad to see you liked it as well. It’s gotten great reviews.

Agreed - the whole series is very well written. Let me know what you think of Iron Gold when you finish it. I don't want to give anything away before you go in with my thoughts.

I just hate it when things in a book based movie change or get skipped. Also Matt Damon is a incredibly talented actor but he didn't suit my imagination of Watney. So I rarely watch movies that are based of a book that I've read, especially when I really enjoyed the book.

As for the Red Rising trilogy, never heard of it but it sure looks like something that I'd really enjoy.
I'm ordering it asap.

True crime, my dad was friends with max mermelstein for many years and when he went into witness protection via his fall out with the cartel he wrote a book called “ the man who made it snow” think very few copies ever got sold because he was a rat of all rats n the publisher got threatened by the cartel possibly even Pablo Escobar personally but the gifted copy’s are a pretty rare find. He gave my dad a copy which got passed down to me. It’s the highlight of my true crime books and collection that’s built itself up to about 15-20books in just a few yrs.
