Easy 5 mile suburban commute to my office. I love the short ride to and from work. I also work from home once a week. My kid’s school is close to home and office, so I’m able to catch their sporting events and other activities on a whim.

I drive 4.5 miles through a relatively small Midwest town each way and love it. I used to live 9 miles away but felt like I was always at a red light so I moved closer into town. At my stage of life (about 50), there’s no way I’d do what you’re thinking about doing.

But depending on your age and financial situation, it could be a way to spend a few years to build up your nest egg. Just remember to look at how taxes will eat into your new found wealth because you most likely won’t be tripling your take home pay. And with those long hours (and since you’ll have more income), I’d look for a local apartment so you could crash closer to your new job and then maybe head back to your current place on the weekends.

I travel to your area regularly and it’s gotten so much worse for commutes in the past 5 years. Good luck on your decision but sometimes money shouldn’t be the motivating reason to make a move.

I really don’t have one office I cover a 2 state territory and about 30 offices. So I drive all the time. I don’t mind it at all. It is a great time to unwind and take in a podcast or radio show.

That being said I can see both sides of your debate. Are you married???kids??? Are you open to moving closer to the new job?? For 3x the money I would see what it would cost me to get out of my lease (maybe a 1-2x monthly rent penalty???) and move closer if you think you will enjoy the job. And that is the most important thing.

If I did not like my job the 35k Miles a year would suck. And I have to admit it is becoming less enjoyable these days. May need to start looking around. I doubt 3x the pay is in my future though!!!

After years and years on the road all over the NY, NJ and South Florida area, at one point as much as two hours one way, I have been blessed for past 8 years or so to work from home.
So........my commute is from one side of my house (bedroom) to the other side (home office).

Two minutes walk to the bus stop, 17 mins bus ride and two mins walk going in to tower in the morning just after 0600.
Going home is at peak time so it's still two minutes walking at each end but the bus journey time doubles. I'm ok with it unless some muppet in earshot is screaming into their phone.

However, when I go back to the UK I have a 30 mile drive each way. It's about an hour unless the kids are off school and then it's about 50 minutes. Monday morning and Friday evening it's about one hour ten. I can do it on the bike in just over half an hour but that's asking to get my collar felt.

About 100 yards walk across the village square. I often use the 60 odd seconds it takes to phone a friend!

Here in Arizona, renters have a lot of rights when it comes to 'breaking' a lease.
In a nutshell, if the owner is given notice and the property is left in the type of good condition where the property or unit can be rented again immediately, the renter is pretty much free to walk away, long term lease or no. If that's all that's holding you back, it might be worth a phone call or two to find out what exactly the situation is there in Texas.

About 15 steps from bedroom to office. Used to drive 200+ miles/day but made a lifestyle choice. 10 years ago told my pregnant wife I was starting my own business out of the house. Wanted to be around more when they were young and after being in my biz for 10+ years it was a calculated risk.
Now it's the best biz decision I ever made. Things are good and I was home for every minute of them growing up.

Gallup poll indicates the average commute for Americans is 48 minutes. Three times the salary; if this is for the same job how is this justified? What is the track record of the new company and their future stability. I have seen people jump ship only to be looking for a job shortly after. Life circumstances, age, family, current promotions options are things to consider.... my two cents

Sorry lost on this... commute 48 mins for 3x salary? Willing to commute for 3x salary?

I’d get on a plane everyday if I got paid 3x my comp.

The original question was how long is your commute. I was merely pointing out the average commute is 48 minutes according to Gallup.

My next point is if you are getting offered three times the salary for the same job, you are currently grossly underpaid and this is a no brainer to take the new job after taking into consideration the stability of the new company.

Last point, the grass is not always greener, I have seen people leave for a perceived better opportunity only to be looking for a another job shortly after

Very true. But nowadays, it seems that people will stay an average of 3-5 years at there current job before moving to a new Company.

Companies are to blame for that, usually. If you're worth a sh1t, you keep taking on more and more responsibility, but they don't pay you more. After 3-5 years you're doing quite a bit more than you're compensated for. If they don't bump your pay, you go to work for the company that will.

I've followed this path, and I've hired quite a few people who were on it too.

Try it until your lease runs out. See if you like it or not. Then move or stay.

I think it largely depends on your stage of life.

I’m 50 and at a stage in my life where earning top dollar isn’t as important as lifestyle. I have no mortgage, no debt of any kind so money isn’t my focus.

I work 5 mins from home and LOVE it. I can come home for lunch, have a nap etc

If I were in my 30s with a big nut to crack every month I think I’d go for the money, With the idea to move closer to the job if I chose

At my current income level, I live comfortably.

I typically work 10-14 hours per day at a very fun workplace with (mostly) great people.

An offer for another position has been presented to me on the other side of the metroplex, that would roughly triple my income. However, my commute would then be one hour, EACH way. I signed a new lease two months ago, so uprooting isn't really a viable option.

How much value do you place on being at a close proximity to work?
If this was a dream job/promotion I'd take it and suck it up until you can move closer to your new work. That or try to get out of you lease sooner or sublease your place. Triple your salary is a big deal.

But I've always said quality of life is always better if you live and work very close together. When I lived in the Silicon Valley people there often had a 1-3 hour commute every morning and every night, just to live in a nice house in a less expensive area. Some would leave home at 3 or 4 in the morning to get to work by 7 or 8. (Tracy to Palo Alto)

I think the commute would be lower down on my priorities.

Do you think you’d enjoy the new job as much as the current own?
You say you lease, would triple the income enable you to get on the housing ladder and buy? Building long term financial security for you and your family has to be important.
Then I’d look at the commute and moving once the lease is up.

Have o say though trebling your wages in any job is incredible - what line of work are you in?

I think I would judge a new job by quite a few other things before travel time.

With that said, I would definitely take a 1 hour commute job for 3X my salary as long as all the other factors were ok.

15 minute commute now. However at triple the pay...I’d do an hour commute each way.

35 to 45 minutes each way depending on traffic. I do go against the commuter flow so I feel sorry for all the people heading South on the CT Merritt Parkway who have a much harder time.
