Scratch!

I’ve had my Sub date for 2 months and have picked up my first scratch 🤦🏻*♂️

Reading these forums has made me relax about it a bit. It was done on Sunday after an afternoon in a country pub with my wife and the dog. We walked home cross country and had to climb down some stone steps. The dog is scared of heights and froze so I carried him down. When I picked him up...scratch.

It looks ok until the light catches it!

Essentially what I’m wondering is 2 things;

1) will Rolex get it more or less out when I service it in a few years;

2) what’s the cost of a replacement clasp?

I’d love it if there was something I could do to get it out myself, but would rather not mess about with it for fear of making it worse!

1) Yes, completely
2) More than is worthwhile and not directly from Rolex either

It’ll be the first of many. The way I’d look at it, now it has it’s first scratch you’ll be less worried about the subsequent ones. Enjoy your great watch!

Congratulations - it will be the first of many!
The other way to think of it is that every time you see that scratch it will remind you of a great afternoon out with your wife and dog for a lazy afternoon at the pub.
That's how I tend to think of the many scratches and blemishes on my watches :)

My OCD would make it difficult to live with that, I'd get it polished.

if i walked around palm up all day it would bug me. Wearing it normally its underneath. Clasps are about the only part of a watch i dont care how scratched they get.

Two months? I scratched my clasp within two hours of first wearing my Sub. The clasp is the part of the watch most subject to scuffs. Replacing it is pointless, because you'll just bung up the new one. Give it some time and see if you get used to it. If after another month or two it still drives you nuts, look into getting it buffed out.

My GMT acquired a bunch of tiny scratches and a deeper one like yours on the clasp. The clasp is a perfect collector for scratches and its polished surface makes them highly visible. My plan is to have my AD take care of all of them in a year or two rather than individually.

Why anyone cares about bracelet/clasp scratches is beyond me. If it were case/crystal/bezel....I can understand, but this?

You can use a sponge to get scratches out. It’s just a brush finish.. See link to video below. It’s simple, but I hold no responsibility for recommending this. I brush my watch myself using the sink sponge. There are different levels of course ness on sponges.

It works, and it’s simple. Always brush with the grain. They sell these sponges at any Home Depot or auto shop. Just a 3m sponge

The scratch looks great. I love clasp scratches. They don't bother me a bit. In general, scratches on a watch's bracelet don't bother me at all and add to the character of the watch. Particularly on a Rolex tool watch.

That's not a scratch wait till you have worn it daily for a few years then perhaps you will have some real scratches. And the only time any Rolex needs any sort of polishing is at normal routine service every 5-8 years. After service watch will be as good as new only to get scratched again.

Get it polished and then put it in a safe. Never wear it again, it's to dangerous!

Scratch!

The only way to avoid scratching a watch is to avoid wearing it. Take a few deep breaths and continue to enjoy your sub while you scratch it up even more in the coming years

Also, RSC will be able to refinish it to like-new when the time for service comes

Congrats, you can now start to enjoy the watch!! I have scratches over all of mine, and I wouldn't let Rolex or anyone else polish them out.

That's not a "scratch". Seriously, it's nothing.

I wouldn't try to polish it, either, as Rolex has a particular brushed style, which you surely will not be able to reproduce, so the entire watch will look strange.

Just learn to live with it, and get it refinished at service time.

Or, put the watch on a strap or Nato if this is really too much for you.

Explorer

Hello Toby,

to ease your concern this is what my newly acquired 114270 Explorer bracelet looks like, it dates from 2007 so 11 years on it has a fair few marks on it as supplied by the previous owner, as the others have told you there will be a fair few more to follow on so please don't get to hung up on your first scratch, in time it will need a service and the RSC will refinish it for you,

Don't worry about the scratches. If you wear the watch it'll get scratches.

That is a good story. Great of you to help out your beloved pooch. Think of that when you and if you ever stare at the scratch.

I'd love to see the dial of your watch if you've got a pic.

I’d judge you if you have a 2-month sub without any scratches on it.

Wear it and soon there will be so many scratches they blend in and you become a real man as opposed to a man with a new rolex.
