'Downgrading' from a GMT to an Explorer?

I currently own a Pepsi GMT 16700 but feel it's a bit similar to my 16610 Sub. Between the two of them I prefer the Sub. I was thinking of selling/trading the GMT for a 114270 Explorer to diversify a bit. Is this a dumb move? Would the Explorer plus $3000 be about right in terms of what I should be looking for if neither has box or papers?

I've tried on the Explorer and it feels small even on my 6.5" wrists but that could be because I'm not used to wearing something so small. That's really my only concern.

On a side note, I am also trading back with a friend for my old Speedy that I had originally purchased new about 5 years ago. I'm aware this would be the most cliche collection ever with a Sub, Explorer, and Speedy. I'd eventually like to add a Reverso as a dress watch. It's funny that I've gone through dozens and dozens of watches but have eventually come back to the classics. They may be boring but I love their versatility and they work great for my business casual lifestyle. I could have saved a lot of time and money had I just stuck with the classics in the first place. But I guess I needed to make the journey for myself to get to this point and not have that doubt in the back of my mind.

My opinion would be to keep the GMT and add the Explorer. All three are great watches, and a rotation of those three is pretty solid.

Crazy if you trade it for an explorer! Such a good looking watch you have now!

I would hold onto the GMT unless you are in a rush. Prices will continue to rise IMO. Also, If your first impression of the exp1 is “it’s a bit small”, I would reconsider and maybe look at current version of exp1.

I don't feel the Pepsi is too similar to the Sub, black GMT maybe, in fact I'd probably say the Exp is more so, so I would add not trade.

Do you still wear it enough to justify having it? No matter how cool the watch is, if you’re not wearing it, it is essentially a paperweight and dead money in your watch box.

If you still enjoy it, keep it. But only keep it if you enjoy wearing it, not because you feel you have to have “x” watch to make a collection.

Same goes for the EXP - of you have doubts about it, just wait till you find something or until that something finds you.

Good luck in your decision!

I would say keep GMT. I also own a 16610 and a GMT (in my case a 16713) and the chamaleon characteristic of the older GMT’s in swapping bezel inserts would allow you to switch the inserts if you want a new look. Go coke or you may try the all brown insert from the 16718 perhaps!

I have an Explorer 2 Polar and wanted to add a 40mm sports watch. The GMT and Sub are too similar in appearance for me once you get past the bezels, and the Explorer has a second time zone, albeit against a less pretty and fixed bezel. I went for a Hulk. They are sufficiently different in size and appearance. In a perfect world I would have all three. In my less than perfect world, I will have a Black Bay GMT by around August. So I guess I'm a frustrated Pepsi owner after all.

I'd only do it if it were for the 214270 MK2 - other than that no

I would if you can keep the GMT and add the explorer 39mm. It’s not a down grade I have one like many of us and a sub and it’s a great watch. Good luck

I'd hang onto the GMT and add. It will be extremely hard to replace the GMT if you let it go, and given the color I think you may get bored of having two all black watches.

Agree. Losing that GMT would hurt down the line...a lot.

'Downgrading' from a GMT to an Explorer?

The GMT’s value is higher and still rising. Not even the new 126710 seems to have slowed it down. Selling it now will almost guarantee you a profit, but nobody knows how much higher it will go in the coming years.

Aesthetically, the GMT and Sub used the same case for a long time so they definitely have a similar look structurally. If the 16700 isn’t wowing you anymore, make the move. Just do so knowing that it will be difficult to replace the GMT down the road. Of course the 16710 is easier to find than the 16700. Almost identical in appearance, they’re a little cheaper too.

For collectibility it’s a bad move.

For daily wear it’s subjective and not unreasonable. The Explorer II is a much different look and is a larger watch. The white dial is stunning.

Definitely agreed the sub and gmt are too similar. That said, the GMT will only continue to appreciate. If you must sell it I completely understand but make sure you’re set on a it’s replacement or make sure you’re getting top dollar. Have you considered an Explorer II? The white dial is amazing

Sub and GMT styling are similar but they are functionally different. Choose a GMT in insert which differentiates the two. The EXPII has typically been one of the Rolex watches which doesn't have appreciation and tends to sell at bargain prices. I you need cash then the deal might work otherwise I'd stay put.

I appreciate the replies. The 214270 is not an option as it wears much too large for me.

I realize the GMT is a more desirable watch than the Explorer but really both may be unnecessary for me. The thing it comes down to for me is do I need this much money tied up in a GMT if I prefer the Sub? A better question may have been - Will I regret selling the GMT? Which I guess no one can answer except for me but I don't think I'll truly know until I do get rid of it.

I really think the Speedy and Sub may be enough for me. I figured I may as well try the Explorer if I have the extra money from selling the GMT. If I don't like it, I'd sell that too and keep just the Speedy/Sub combo until I can find a Reverso I like.

I've owned a Coke GMTII (found it redundant having already owned the Pepsi GMT), a Polar Explorer 2 (I got bored with it after buying the Pepsi), and a No Date Sub C (couldn't deal with the fat lugs). I still have the older date Sub and the GMT for now.
