Agree. Go with what sings to you, if you can afford it. If you buy based on perceived cost or perceived value (or future resale value) in order to save some $$ you’ll end up flipping it. I have had the black dial 216570 and loved it, but I sold it and ended up with a diver (and I always have GMTs...). That’s my experience. YMMV. Happy hunting!

Personally I like the Exp because it has a cool movement with a 24 hour function. And I like that is a little less common. The sub is a great watch and popular for a reason. But I wanted a Sport Rolex that wasn’t as common or flashy.

Because I already had my dad’s 1655 I wanted either a GMT or Sub date, AD showed me this and I was sold. Bought my second expl II. Love it and has spent hours on my wrist washing our son, reading bed time stories, waking him up because of the lume, traveling for work, etc.

This why the watch has a special value for me and it will get more and more special....

So buy the watch that sings to you! That is the only reason to go for a specific model

Anything you buy runs the risk of losing value. Obviously both models are mass produced so there isn't a lot of rarity between them. My advice would be to purchase the one that sings to you! The bonus is that both aren't hard to find so you should be able to try them on at any AD and make you decision then.

I think the Exp II is the best bang for your buck in the sports line up. Same movement as the GMT, its big and comfortable wth great tapered lugs and flies under the radar. It has the added bonus of being very rugged. I have both the polar and black and they are great. They tend to get the most wrist time.

I've never been a fan of the current Exp II---I always thought it was too big and I wasn't a huge fan of the orange GMT hand, but looking at how crazy everything else has gone, I'll say it's prob the best buy of a SS sports Rolex at the moment.

Bad idea, that takes away from the original intent of the tool that it was meant for, which is exploring caves/rocks/ etc.
The ceramic would get broken too easily.

OF COURSE, 99.999% of buyers will never use it like that, but.....

If you are looking for a watch to hold value buy the Sub, it's one of the most iconic watches in history. Add to that it appears Rolex will hand feed them into the market place for the near future at least, and that will definitely keep the value up.
The Exp II on the other hand, is available at every AD I've stopped in from coast to coast, usually in both colors, which would suggest it isn't a big seller for Rolex, thus the current price market.
All that aside, pick the watch you like best, wear it and enjoy it. Who knows what the future brings in terms of economy, people's tastes, etc.

You will never know about the future value. I bought an 16710 black GMT in 2004 and sold it 4 years later at the same price and very glad about its value. Today, the same model for the same year will cost around 2 times more.

What will happen to if ROLEX stop the production of this model for whatever reason?

I never understood the appeal of the Sub ND, it’s just so plain.

If you’re going that route, get a SD4K, at least you have a date without a cyclops and it’s a nicer watch IMO.

The explorer is a great watch in many ways:

1. All brushed
2. Date
3. GMT
4. 42 mm
5. Excellent white dial
6. Amazing lume
7. Cheaper than you other option
9. Less popular than Sub ND
10. Overall excellent value for the price

Great feedback thanks for the responses I will definitely post in about 5 weeks when I make my purchase I love both watches the only question is which do I love more if I get the Explorer 2 will I always have a Submariner box that needs to be checked and which is most likely the easiest to get out of if one day I wish

Sorry, is your question which is the better watch or about re-salability? I don’t buy watches with the anticipation that I’m going to be selling them, so it’s a non issue for me. I love the Explorer II for its looks and function, although due to my wrist size I went with the 16570 40mm. It’s a far better watch for me than a ND sub. Nevertheless there are huge numbers of fans for the ND sub and if you love it, no other watch will do, it is iconic. Get what speaks to you, don’t worry about resale value.

IMO the Exp II and Milgauss are the hidden gems in today's Rolex world.

The skyrocketing price/demand for a few popular models (looking at you 16710 and the new releases) hasn't touched the EXP or MG yet, and they remain highly desirable and modestly priced watches.

Don't tell anyone though.

I have been struggling with the same conundrum but the polar 216570 instead of black dial.

I am fortunate to have several watches and perhaps that is why I went with the watch I really love and last week bought the polar 216570! Iike so many have said, I would go with what you love rather than what may be desirable in the future!

For me I love the scarcity of the explorer unlike the ubiquitous subs and GMTs I see everywhere (don’t get me wrong I have an LV and BLNR) but I love the big dial, fat hands and orange 24 hour hand.

To be honest you can’t go wrong and I expect will get both when circumstances allow!
