Radium > radon

We all know that radium was ubiquitous in early vintage Rolex. New study links it to radon and of course subsequently lung cancer if not stored properly. I assume this is mainly for those who have tens or even hundreds in storage.

Much ado about nothing. Unless you keep the watches tightly sealed in a box, then periodically huff the contents, you’ll never get as much radon as my dad gets in his basement.

What sort of levels does he see in the basement? Did you guys consider mitigation?

The house was built in 1929. It has a background from the concrete. They looked at it a few years ago during the big scare, but were advised that their old CRT TVs put out as much radiation.

To be a health risk, radon needs to be chronic exposure. It’s not plutonium, the occasional whiff isn’t going to cause cancer. If anybody is worried about their watches giving them cancer, I will happily hold them in secure storage at my house. They can sit next to my uranium glass collection.

When I was a kid, I ate my oatmeal every day out of a lovely orange bowl. Turns out it had a uranium ceramic glaze. It chirped the geiger counter pretty hard, but no one in our family has had any ill affects from all these low level radiation sources.

Understood.

I had to buy the stupid monitor when I bought my house at my wife’s demand. Turned out we have no issues where I am after monitoring for about a year. Apparently there are roughly 22k deaths per year from lung cancer radon cases.

You can go to nrc.gov and check out the sources of natural radiation in your daily life. You may be surprised where you’re getting most of your exposure.

Just had to do this in a house I am selling. $1100 later, all good. Should have opened a basement window for 5 minutes.
