Help - Hulk and Kermit
I have settled upon purchasing a Green Submariner and realise there is no imminent prospect of this from any AD here in the UK, so going to bite the bullet and pay a premium.
The 116610LV is the current model, I believe? But looking at the resale market, I see lots of references to "Hulk" and "Kermit" green Subs - what is the difference between the two? Sorry if this is a very dim question ....

Hi. The hulk is the 6 digit sub with ceramic green bezel and sunburst green dial. The Kermit is the 16610lv, 5 digit with green bezel insert and black face.

Another example where using model numbers would be good.
Another good example is using GMT Pepsi to describe he new ceramic model?

You are correct in saying the 116610LV is the current model, which has a green ceramic bezel and a green dial. Some people refer it as the ‘Hulk,’ although that moniker is not universally accepted and some get a tad hot under the collar when nicknames like ‘Hulk’ and ‘Batman’ are used (yet are ironically - and maybe hypocritically - unaffected when nicknames like ‘Pepsi’ and ‘Coke’ and ‘Bluesy’ and ‘Kermit’ are used ...but I digress). The 16610LV is the older model, which some refer to as the Kermit. It has a green aluminum (non-ceramic) bezel and a black face. While it’s important to ensure the authenticity of both of buying grey (there are a lot of fakes out there, and while most are easy to spot there are some that are deceptively insidious), when it comes to the ‘Kermit’ one has to be extra careful. Why? Because Kermits can be of three types - genuine ones, fake ones and frakenwatches. Genuine ones are quite clear, and fakes are as explained above. Frakenwatches is where things become tricky - these are real watches with real parts that are however not meant for those watches. There was a recent example here where some TRF member bought a Kermit and had it checked for authenticity, and everything was okay - the member’s local AD said it was genuine. However, when he took it to RSC for service, they told him it wasn’t authentic. What had happened was someone had taken an ordinary 5-digit black Submariner Date, removed its black aluminum bezel and replaced it with a (genuine) green aluminum bezel, replaced the hands and other minor stuff, and then sold it to the shop that eventually sold it to the TRF member as a Kermit. Thus, while for both the Hulk and the Kermit one has to watch out for fakes, for the Kermit one also has to watch out for frakenwatches as well. So, my advice is to do homework on the seller. Make sure you’re perfectly comfortable. When you get the watch, it may be best to send it for servicing (especially if it’s a Kermit). Both are lovely watches though Last edited by BLNR Nairobi; 10 July 2018 at 06:33 PM.. Reason: Diction |

Wow guys, this forum really is brilliant. Thanks for the help and in particular the advice from BLNR Nairobi.
It is the "Hulk" I will go for .... I do prefer it, having now noticed the black dial of the "Kermit" and it sounds safer! Now just a question of finding one where the premium is not too preposterous!

Just my 5p. Get on a list with an AD and save yourself the 3 - 4 grand premium for something else to tie you over until it comes to your turn

16610LV is going to go more up than a 116610LV that just came out a few years ago.

David Duggan had a Hulk in stock last month. I think it was around the 6-8 mark.
Maybe worth a call. |

Get the 16610LV, because you can easily put a black insert on it too.

Get the 16610LV. The “Kermit” is the 50th anniversary celebration of the most iconic sport reference watch, the Rolex Submariner. You will not be disappointed.

Awesome pic, as always
OP, also keep in mind that the hulk will have the square lugs vs tapered lugs of the Kermit. U can clearly see the difference in the pic above ^ Personally, I prefer the Kermit Although I like the sunburst dial of the hulk, I do not like the color of the bezel in certain light. 2 cents
