Why? Who knows, but there's psychology at work that could probably be studied matching watch model choices with personality types. In any case, it's an amusing TRF phenomenon. People must really walk around thinking "Oh, yay for me and my choice. I went into an AD, plunked down my money, and chose a Sub which I feel is the most iconic Rolex. The BEST. Now, I must try and tell others all about it".

Reality: There is no pecking order. There is no "best" or "top classic". But it is fun to watch the herd gather and bleat on about the illusion whenever it's raised. Replace the refrain "Mine. Mine. Mine" with "Sub. Sub. Sub" and the responses from the TRF Sub Mafia remind me of the flock of seagulls in Finding Nemo.
Nice take on it, but I never posted any of my personal photos yet .
Plus, I listed all sports Rolex models I could think of , by chance I put
Submariner first ... I haven’t given my opinion yet ...
So I guess I can conclude your not a sub fan in particular ?

Regards,

OP

What I'm a fan or not a fan of is irrelevant, and peoples' favorites isn't what your question asked. My comment was directed at the premise of what the question you did ask is based on; that some sort of hierarchy for the "best" or "top classic" could exist, and the usual source of this highly amusing notion.

Well Mario’s question is a lot better than posting some grainy photo of a celebrity wearing a watch and wondering whether it’s a Submariner

I posed the question for fun with no intention of a clear winner
on my part ... We all have different takes, tastes and personal
passion for a particular reference that speaks to us individually!
I just wanted to see members getting involved expressing
theirs thoughts, feelings and pics
I hope you continue to enjoy the thread ...

If you asked the general public I would say 99% would say the most iconic steel sports rolex watch is the submariner date.

Funny Brian , your question was a genuine one ...
Though it does look like a sub to me as well ...

For me the 114060. The modern evolution of the original classic. The watch that literally created the genre of a “sports watch” classic and the king!

No TT, No 5-digit, and any one of modern SS GMTs and Subs can become the best all-around sports watch, IMHO.

A lot of love for the usual suspects; Sub, GMT and Daytona. If the question is best all around watch I'd say GMT. If the question is most iconic then I'd say Submariner.

For me, it has to be the 40mm Sea-Dweller. It’s not my favourite Rolex Sport watch, but I think it’s the King.

It is an improvement/evolution of the iconic Submariner, if your answer is Submariner, I have to ask why not the more capable evolution of that watch?

Because it has no date magnifier it has a much more symmetrical appearance similar to the no date Submariner, yet it still has a date and again much improved capabilities.

The ceramic version has very slightly better and more symmetrical bezel than the Sub because the gradations cover the whole bezel not just the first fifteen minutes.

GMT functions can be done in your head, it’s simple math. Timing functions can be done with the bezel, no need for a chronograph. Extreme water-proof abilities can not be acomplished using the GMT or Daytona.

Since this has always been a pure tool watch Rolex has never seen fit to make a PM version or put colourful bezels/dials on it. It is purposeful and practical and nothing else.

My favourite Rolex is probably the GMT, and I like PM and TT Rolex watches but think the best answer to the OP’s question is the Sea-Dweller

YG Sub with Blue dial. Classic but different. Dressy, but casual.
