Question about the day and date wheel on a DD
While I'm not likely to ever buy a used DD (never say never, right?), The only dials that interest me are the silver stick or white stick. However, I've noticed on many used DDs that the background color on these wheels seems to be really dark while on others it's nice and bright.
Not being remotely an expert on the internals of the DD, I wonder what's the reason for it. Hopefully, I'm clear on what I'm asking. I tried to grab some example images from chrono24 and bob's watches but those sites don't seem to allow it. Instead of view picture, they're just links. |

Looks like the date wheel faded or darken since many of the DD watches you see on those sites are pre-1990s.

Also dial changes, if you change a champagebdial to silver the day and date wheel will be a different colour.

Maiden, that's what I was guessing in which case there are a LOT of changed dials on DDs.
When the dial looks good and the day and date wheel background is so dark, I can't imagine it has anything to do with sun as jaisoline posted. Still, I would think when a dial was changed to something where the background is now dark, someone cheaped out. |

If you buy used
The day/date discs can be changed for silly money I believe one that is double quick with a tight bracelet Will save you $20k from the current msrp. Plus spend 700-800 and have it serviced at Rolex RSC and get an official warranty as well |
