Cyclops Magnification! (Terrible)
So I spent the day yesterday here in northern Oregon at a shopping outlet with the wifey, I decided to visit a a couple of the mall type brand jeweler stores which had a poster advertising pre-owned Rolex.
One of the stores had a good selection of mostly pre-owned DJ's and a couple DD's. However, I immediately noticed that all of them had after market crystals with non magnification cyclops. (???) I pointed this out to the clerk (very nice) and she confirmed that they do infact replace all the crystals . She was wondering why I questioned it, i showed her my watch and explained the differences in the magnification. She was a bit shocked and confused. I have to say it was a bit irritating that these decent pieces were being screwed with like that. Not to mention way over priced. |

What answer was given as to why they swap out the crystals?

Have to agree there would be no point in changing crystals unless badly scratched. And the cyclops is just stuck on sapphire crystals, but if the older acrylic part of crystal, that do not magnify the same as the sapphire..

Yeah the store you're talking about is Helzberg's Diamonds... I usually peek into their case when I walk by. Their prices are absurd, though they sometimes have a few nice pieces. I've also seen their little carfax-like report that shows aftermarket crystals. No idea why. I could understand it if the piece originally came with plexiglass crystals and they replace them with sapphire as an "upgrade" but I've looked at a few that would have had sapphire originally. The probable answer is that it's cheaper to use an aftermarket crystal than an an OEM crystal. Which would also make me wonder if there are any other aftermarket parts in the movement.

Sounds like they change the damaged/marred crystals themselves, and have to use aftermarket parts. No way Rolex would grant any of them a license, or grant them official dealer status. The mall stores in question simply are not Rolex people. How do you not know - just at a glance - that the cyclops' are wrong?

That would be a huge red flag and turn off for me...almost all the fake rolex replicas have bad or no magnification cyclopses and it's a 'staple' of a fake watch.

Stay away from those. Only OEM should have been used.
