my wife does it. I think the point it its hard to do if you are sedentary and it keeps you active which is always healthy. Having a number makes it a goal so you can "collect" your steps. Arbritary or not she is far more active when tracking it.

While the 10,000 step goal is arbitrary, nobody will argue that sitting on your ass is better for you than taking 10,000 steps per day.

Most of these things are based on pseudoscience at best, and just made up at worst - like the Omega 3 is good for your heart myth that just won't go away (because it sells fish oil pills).

There are too many variables in health/exercise/diet regimes and none of them can be isolated, making any "scientific" study flawed from the outset.

One thing we do know is that sitting on the couch shovelling in chocolate bars will kill you, so some number of steps probably isn't a bad place to start......but 10,000? No one knows.

I did the 10,000 steps for a while, it got me started running. Then I took the Fitbit off and only tracked my excercise. I wouldn’t stop running until I hit my 10k steps. It gives a good benchmark but to be truest healthy and semi athletic you need to be doing atleast 18,000+ steps a day minimum from my experience

I agree that it is not a panacea.

For example, the heavy smoker who burns through a pack of cigarettes while walking 10,000 steps around a track or trail.

It must be taken into context. A sedentary youngster doing video games would benefit from time spent getting 10,000 steps.

A senior citizen with arthritis and knee pain could be doing some damage though. They may benefit more from joint friendly bone strengthening resistance work.

What I believe is universally true is the motivational factor. Rewarding goals like consecutive days attaining the 10,000 steps. And now Android and iOS devices measure even more things like exercise minutes, standing minutes, calculated calorie burn. All told it is directionally correct to move, move, move unless that motion is self-defeating by doing damage.

10000 steps a day is a lot of steps... You just should keep active and do whatever your body feels like it need.
If it is 30 minutes walk it is also ok to me... But i think you should so at least 2 times a week some strength training

The 10000 number is an interesting benchmark that helps some reach a goal. I do not know that the same benefits could not be had for 5-8k or less. The key is to not just sit around.

I tried wearing a fit bit for a while. I got tired of all the digital/electronic "noise." But given how much time I spend on a computer, it was likely just the last straw. That, and it was just too damned bossy!

And the key to get old is to consume 30% less calories than you actually need to consume. But for that you have to know first what your body needs to consume so you have to monitor that for a few months first prior starting a diet like that. Also it is very important to include specifical diets in that diet as it could be prone to bone/muscle loss, but i think you have a safe bet if you include 2 times weight training+sufficient but not overdo protein. At least is works in monkeys and rats lol,,

My wife does 20k steps daily at a minimum. I’m very active and will mountain bike 20 miles with ease, but 20k steps is too much for me.

I walked 3 miles on Saturday, 5 miles on Sunday and another 4 miles on Monday. I know the distances because I know how far it is from my home to where I walked and back. I don’t need a device to tell me how many steps I took.

By the way, I used to wear a Fitbit and every time I rode my motorcycle to work it logged that I had climbed 76 flights of stairs and another 76 flights of stairs on the ride home.

I find quantifying your activity helps push you to be more active, there's a certain freedom in structure... lol its funny how IM a 40 year old man and still get a kick out of when all the challenges light up green and I get a kudos.. a bit Pavlovian. On a serious note its nice to see the heart rate charted, plus reviewing heart rate after a long run/bike session lets you adjust your workout accordingly. Just my 0.02

I don't know how many steps I get every day, but I run 80-90km a week now so it's probably more than 10000 steps a day.

Bas - I know you’re aware of excessive wear to gears and pinions and springs of all types.

The knee and ankle engineering is about the same.

Insane distances now; inflamed tissues later.

Haha i understand, sport in this manner ain't beneficial for a body. I also understand the kick it gives, i lift insane weights, not healthy in any way i guess… But i have sort of plans to reduce it to sort of ''mid'' level where i think it actually is very beneficial. But yes.. In our situation we do not need to look on that 10000 step mark otherwise it would burn out your complete system.
I believe, 10000 steps is about 1.5/2hrs of walking a day.. I strongly believe 1 hour of walking is max in terms of benefit(in 1 time) At least for my body....,, I think if you learn to know your body, you obviously know this allready we feel much better than any guideline what to do to be ''healthy''
you also have a specific diet right? Also this are ways to learn to know your own body.
