Modern Heuer Monaco Musings...

So I tried on this watch in Las Vegas last weekend. Man, I sure like the fit. Wish I had taken a wristie!

Retail price is $5,900. My TS could get it for me at a good discount...

However, I just can’t get over the Tag specter. A lot to pay for a Tag / non-vintage Heuer...but in house movement and great design.

I am not a McQueen fanboy so that’s not a huge consideration. I do not have any square watches so this would add some variety.

Thoughts? Any first-hand experience with this model, Tag servicing etc?

I love the looks of these watches, but, for some reason, I thought that this wasn't an in-house movement? I had it in my head that it was a base Sellita movement? Not that there's anything wrong with a Sellita movement - I just didn't think it was in-house.

Ah...you’re right. Based on the stellita. My bad.

I guess that makes the price feel steeper. But new non- Tag branded watches of the “Heritage” moniker seem to be prices in this range.

Yeah, it seems to be the price. I've really been wanting to pick up the Monaco Gulf Anniversary edition because I love the look and love the color, but I'm not willing to pay the prices that I've seen for them - I don't personally see the value proposition. But, they're attractive as hell and I keep going back and looking at them.

I prefer Bell & Ross for a square watch. Same movement as a Monaco.

I like these as well. Dig the old moniker. Cool sporty Chrono. Definitely want to get at discount though.

I think you either love or hate the square
Monaco design (I’m in the latter camp, no offense). I also think these “heritage” tags are way overpriced for what they are, especially given the movement. Just my 2cents

I’ve always been drawn to the Monaco, but never pulled the trigger for the reasons you mention. Great looking watch though. I like their newish monza too

No offense.

I like the watch, but I’ll just wait for one to pop up used...they must tank on the secondary market.

Cool watch. The model has been around for many years and comes from a cool historical place.

Tag does a good job with the design and I have owned the Monza and the Autavia. For me they get lost in the shuffle of a 10 plus watch collection. I bought mine with a significant discount and still took a loss on a flip with both.

If you really like a watch, the price rarely matters, again. If you can't figure out what works for you, or you just like flipping watches, expect to take a pounding, periodically.

That's a great looking version of the Monaco.

I hate selling / flipping. I’ve regretted nearly every sale I’ve ever made. Not because if any loss, but I miss the watches.

That said, I am having trouble with the notion of paying even $4k post discount.

After thinking some more, no more than $3 k or so minty used might be better.

I know Monaco has a history and following, but I've always liked Monza better. A lot less common too. And a little less square lol

Love my only tag. Great history...first auto chrono, first waterproof square case, rich racing history, worn by Steve McQueen, adds great diversity to any collection, clear caseback, etc. I like it better than my Daytona, which I flipped.

Monaco is a great watch, and this is a pretty good version of it too (though I personally prefer the versions with the horizontal baguettes). I have a CAW211B (ETA base) and I also had for a while a CAW211P (Sellita SW300 base), and while both of them keep very good time (well within COSC) the SW300 was actually the most accurate of the two...

As for the price, well you should be able to get a clean used CAW211P for around $3500 from a reputable and place (guess how I know :)), but that silver dial is much more uncommon.

If you like it, buy it. I’d put some elbow grease into finding the absolute cheapest price.

I’ve spent the last two months constantly taking a non WIS / budding enthusiast out of buying the Gulf edition at anything more than $3k. It doesn’t matter if that price doesn’t exist right now, it will at some point.

If the price is right then I like them. But only the blue dial or gulf. Not that silver dial. Not sure why, it is just so blah.

Same exact model on Hodinkee at exactly the same price:

https://shop.hodinkee.com/products/t...t=874731503631

BTW the 'Gulf' and 'blue jeans' are good but not the most special/expensive models of 'new' Monaco (those would be the limited edition models from 2010: CAW211A and also the CAW211B)

It's not for me; but, I see it's place in the "classic" lineup.

Good to hear you say that. The price in my head for that specific watch was $3K, but I didn't know if I was being realistic. That seems about right for the watch. Hopefully I can find one.

That dial is really nice, reminds me of the Patek 5235. With Monacos I find the crystal really reflective and thus cheap looking, maybe a lighter dial will help.
