Thanks for all the feedback. I'm pleased with the watch though and happy to get it considering how hard these are to obtain.

Congrats on the Sub

Aside from the drama en route to the AD, glad it worked out for you.

This is one of the reasons that some AD's just sell references like these to the grey market or to known big clients (whales)....to avoid encounters with the general public entirely.

No arguing over deposits, first come first serve, stickers, gifts....etc. Just sell the watch and never hear a peep about it...depending on the dealer, it's worth it..

What you just described is a distribution business. ADs are in the business of customer service, which inherently is a pain in the butt, because that's what customers are. If they don't like it, why go into the business to begin with?

You're absolutely right and that's what some AD's are morphing themselves into. Distributors that supply the grey market. Sell in bulk for much less hassle...less honorable? Sure.

Seems rather crappy to make you drive out that far with no guarantee you would get the watch. I’m not sure I would have played that game but you got the watch so enjoy it and move on. Some ADs wouldn’t even consider you local enough to have sold you the watch.

Not defending their behavior, but maybe they get a lot of people in saying they'll buy but never do. It's a crappy way to treat someone regardless. But glad to hear you got it. Congrats!

No doubt they do, but I think it would be fair to hold the watch for the person on the list, and set a deadline for purchase - say 24 hours. For every no show, it's another day the watch doesn't sell, but in the current climate, it still wouldn't take long to unload it. It sure is better than calling a bunch of customers at once and initiating what amounts to a land rush.

I don't agree with the "whoever gets here first" idea. If they offer it to you, they should hold it for a little while, even if only a few hours.

My AD insists on taking stickers off. It's a new Rolex policy. He's funny, so he puts them in a bag and gives them to me! I've actually still never seen a coffin, and I've been through a number of Rolex watches over the last 30 years.

AD owner called me yesterday concerning WG Daytona Oysterflex I had inquired about the day prior with a salesperson at her establishment. She left me a voicemail, which I heard, but didn't have time to call her back. Today, I get a second call from the owner, who when I answered, asked, "Did you not get my voicemail yesterday?" "Yes, I did, but haven't had time to call you back." "Oh, well, I don't have that watch, but may get another in a month or two, do you want me to call you when we get one in?" Yes.

It was like, what possible reason would I have for NOT calling the Rolex AD back after hearing a VM. They didn't even have the watch. I mean come on, people have lives.

Incoming 116610LN & AD shenanigans

Your AD is very, very low-grade.

No doubt they have a really long waiting list, but at least give you a few hours to get there before offering to the next person on the list.

If I were you, I’d have purchased the watch and had serious words with the person you spoke to and told them that it was extremely poor business practice.

Whilst most on this forum are enthusiasts, in the real world we do have daily commitments and cannot just drop everything on the spot and run to the AD to claim their most recent delivery.

I don’t think the AD is greedy as evidently some other dealers are only accepting ‘bulk orders’ from customers who want the more popular models where they have to purchase other items equating to a certain value.

Your AD knows how popular that reference is, why create a frenzy?! If they give you a few hours and you don’t make it as you say you will, guaranteed someone down that list will buy it when they call the next number.

With ref to the stickers, normal practice these days in most AD’s.

Congrats OP, enjoy a classic! I would prob call the manager and tell him/her that their “first through the door” policy stinks. Maybe use it as an opportunity to further build a relationship w this AD.
