Help needed from Rolex Chronograph experts

Guys,

I work with a gentleman who's father left him his rolex watches when he passed away. Well taken care of and always serviced by Rolex.

The first is a Rolex Sub 5513 from 1969. Great condition but sadly it no longer has the matte dial or hands. This is his daily wear watch.

The 2nd one is the one that we are curious about. It was a chrono that his mother purchased for his father when he was born in 1965. This is the one that he cherishes and only wears it about twice a month. Any help on identifying it and an idea of value would be very helpful to him as he wants to have some idea of worth before getting it appraised.

Thanks for the help guys!

BTW, I think he has the original documentation for both but don't remember.

Very, very nice watch..

Probably a Cosmograph model 6238 which was the last issue before the Tachymeter bezel was moved to the outside of the crystal. (new bezel)

Although you could probably order this watch with different bracelets, it probably came with a riveted Oyster bracelet and the Jubilee was added later..

I would date it to before 1960 because the 6239 Cosmo came out in 1960 with the outside bezel, but there were probably plenty of 6238's still around. This one and later models were powered by the Valjoux 72, a Chrono movement that Rolex used for 50 years..

These things have been selling for $25,000 bucks or more, depends on the collector. Also, the price could go higher at one of the various auction houses such as Antiquorium..

To get a better handle on things, the bracelet should be taken off to find the model and serial numbers engraved on the case sides..

I'm with Larry. Looks like a 6238. I've seen asking prices around 35K.

Yes agree its a 1960s 6238 pity its not got the dark grey Titanium dial they are very rare and very expencive. But still a expencive watch they are normaly seen with the riveted oyster type bracelet.Average price now $25000 plus if it was a Titanium dial $35000.

Very nice chrono, congrats on obtaining it. The prices mentioned are a bit optimistic as vintage prices(aswell as modern) have been going down as of lately but you still have a great chrono there , even though the later ones with the tachy on the bezel are more in demand. My recommendation is to keep it for a while and enjoy it a bit unless you need some fast cash, but don't expect the prices mentioned or you'll be disappointed. Good luck.
