My Twin Gruen Ocean Chief Diver
I have been searching for Gruen Ocean Chief for a couple of years already and to my surprise, two pieces were offered to me last week. Both are in very good condition specially the gloss dials with radium lumes. The cases appear to be unpolished and the other watch came with a beads of rice bracelet without the Gruen Logo. It looks exactly like the one in old Gruen print ads so could it be that the bracelets originally used did not have the logo? The watch case itself is only 36mm in diameter. It is the concave bezel that makes the watch look big since it measures 39mm across.
I also bought a third one but its missing the desirable concave bezel. What is intriguing is the sterile dial which under the loop does not show any sign of printing that was erased or radium lumes applied. The Gruens are indeed great additions to my collection. Great to see some diversity of collections here.
I'm a big fan of the old Gruen offerings. This looks to be a Fifty Fathoms "tribute" and I like it a lot. The last one may be/have been a collection of parts over several years. I noticed right away the seconds hand is not the same as the other two. But if they are that rare, it probably took someone years to get that close, which I can certainly relate to! |
