M116719 Retired???
There is speculation that the 116719BLRO has been retired (Both the black dial and new Basel 2018 blue dial). The intent of this post is not to publicly debate whether this is true or not but to gather community input on what this would mean to the future desirability of the 116719. The black dial version was only produced for 4 years. The blue dial was introduced at Basel just 6 months ago and there are probably only a handful of blue dial 116719’s in existence. If true, would it be fair to assume that the blue dial version may be the most limited Rolex produced in the modern era of Rolex? Why would Rolex introduce a watch at Basel and discontinue it 6 months later? I’m interested to get this forums feedback.

When you say "there has been speculation" what are you referring to?

Possibly because we'll shortly be seeing a 126719 BLRO with the new movement that is used in the SS BLRO and both CHNRs
To all intents and purposes its the same watch, but technically a discontinuation as there is a change in reference number.

So let me ask this:
If the WG BLRO with the blue dial gets replaced by one with the new, improved movement (which obviously it should), will collectors clamor to buy (and pay up for) the short run of blue dialed WG models with the older, less good movement? I don't know how far this "collectibility" craze goes.

Well, for speculators, it has an msrp of $36,750.
Started out at D SW for over $38,000. Can now be had, brand new, unworn, for $35,675, first I have seen below MSRP. |

Not everything discontinued goes up in value but perhaps in the short run
Certainly the BLRO would be a collectible |

I think it was pretty obvious that the 3186 based GMT Masters in WG blue dial weren't meant to be around forever. I don't think they'll be anymore valuable than prior, at least not in the short-term. More than likely we'll see the black dial back in WG again and the blue was to differentiate/make the 3186 based more collectable in the meanwhile to move them. Margins are highest on PM, so I'm sure they'll want to eventually get the 3285 into as many PM as possible.
