scotchbrite pads

There are a lot of people who "self-service" their bands with scotchbrite pads. Id like to try, which one do I buy?

I think it's the green pads. Disassemble the bracelet, tape the ends down to a substrate, make sure to use straight strokes [most important] in one direction, finish off with 0000 steel wool, then reassemble the bracelet. Also, tape any polished areas so you don't inadvertently brush them too.

I haven't used Scotchbrite but have had good results with a Bergeon 2834-C pen on brushed links.

If you have access to a store that sells autobody supplies, they have 3M pads that are a bit finer than the green. I use a brown one, followed up by the grey Ultra fine.

I use them when varnishing wood on my boat to cut the shine between coats. The grey, ultrafine is part number 07448, ultra fine hand pad. The coarser, brown pad is 07447. I place the pad on the workbench and then pull the bracelet across it, holding it down on the pad with my thumb and pulling it via a string/wire through where the spring bars go. The brown pad gets the worst out, the grey one gives the nice satin finish like the factory finish.

I used that method on both my Rolex and Marathon bands. I also used it on the sides of my old Marathon TSAR and it created a finish identical to the factory finish on my new SAR.

Here is the link to the 3m part number. you should be able to buy the one pad at a time from a body shop supply store. I found mine at a marine store where I bought my varnish.

Just checked on Ebay and the 07448 and 07447 are easy to find and less than $20 a box of 20. Incidentally, I have seen the small pieces of the brown ones sold as pads for finishing Oyster bands at much higher prices and only a small piece.

Actually, those are the areas that I'm trying to brush out, lol. No bling for me.

I just found a brown pad with "fine" written on it laying around the house. It worked perfectly.

Just today I used a Scotch Brite pad identical to the one pictured on my Sub-C.

I didn't go through any of the trouble of separating the case and bracelet or taping it down. Just applied very light pressure to the areas I wanted to touch up. The result is a finish identical to factory.

For AP lovers: NEVER USE IT ON YOUR AP.

Each watch brushed polish is different.

ROLEXES: The finish is one that mimics the one that Scotch Brite produces, so results are outstanding.

AP: the finish mimics multiple slightly thicker parallel lines (one shiny one satin) which will result in the appearance of 2 different types of polishes if you apply the Scotch Brite pad. Enjoy this one until extremely necessary to polish. FYI AP will never polish a watch more than 3 times in its life.

DO NOT use real steel wool, but rather a synthetic version (like Scotch Brite)

Welcome to the forum. No need to resurrect 8 year-old threads though.
